Swapping 5-speed aut. for 6-speed aut.

Hi

Wondering if anybody knows if it is possible or even better, have done it?

Is it plug and play or are mods needed to make it fit?

The car needs to be reprogrammed I am told, but other than that, are there downsides to making such a change?

My car is and E85 (obviously) from 2004.

I'd start by finding out if the N series engine transmission bolt pattern is the same as the earlier M series engines. Beyond that I'd be looking at realoem as I think the diff, propshaft and possibly driveshafts will be different and thats just for starters. Honestly I think this will be a lot more complicated than you think, even if you get all the mechanically bits bolted together getting the existing m series engine's ecus to talk to the n series gearbox will no doubt be a pain in the proverbial! If you really want a six speed auto, if really is far easier to sell the car and buy a post facelift
 
A reverse swap was discussed here, it's going to be a lot of work and money so I'd just change the car TBH

Thanks a lot to the both of you for the answer :-) :thumbsup: .

Will keep the car and the gearbox for as long as it will run. I asked to prepare myself, if I need to change the transmission. Changed the fluid (which was smelly and dirty) a couple of weeks ago and the gearbox did not run smoothly after that. Did not flush it. It quite often has a deep "humming" and vibration to it and seems a bit "lazy" when shifting. Some days (but not too many) it runs flawlessly and silently.

Will change the olie once more on Friday to get up from 70% to 90% fresh fluid and hope this fixes the issue. If not a renovated new gearbox may the the solution - hence my questions on possible "upgrade" to 6-speed.

Any other ideas as to what my problem is / could be solved?
