Swapped Starter, now EML and autorevving

Was getting the no-crank-no-start problem. Swapped the starter with new Bosch. Happily it started...yay! And then....

The EML light turned on and it autorevs. It's just like this:

I swapped the starter out without taking the intake manifold off. Could I have busted something down there in the process? Or is there something else I should be trying to get the Z4 running again?

Put a code reader on it and see what code(s) have been set, that should point you in the right direction for a fix.
There will be codes set as the EML is lit. Check for air leaks from holes or splits in the intake rubber boot and all vaccum pipes across the engine. Come back here with the codes you get when scanned.

Thanks colb.

So here's what I've found:
a) There is a tear in the intake boot...a small one in the smaller hose. Ordered a new one. However, online I see a lot of people replacing this part without and the symptoms are not the catastrophic failure I'm seeing; so I suspect my issue is more than that.
b) I've got a fairly pedestrian OBD2 scanner. But the two codes it throws are:
P1632 Throttle valve adaptation conditions not met
P1635 Throttle valve adaptation; Lower mechanical stop not adapted

Sounds like the throttle body is running to wide open straight away or is stuck open. Possibly the wiring got disconnected or damaged when you did the starter. It's not a common failure mode at all.

Thanks. I think when I get in there to replace the boot, I'll pull the throttle body out too and see if there's something amiss.

Thanks smorris. You're amazing, you gave me just the place to poke at.

I took off the intake boot, and got down into the throttle body. Sure enough, there was a little piece of fabric that was keeping the throttle from seating quite right (my fault - I had accidentally left a microfiber cloth in there to try and keep junk out, and then started it before realizing, "oh crap, I forgot to pull that out".) Apparently, even after removing the cloth there was a little bit that was stuck in there and keeping the flap from closing correctly. Pulled that out, reset, and all's well now.

Thanks for your help!
