Suspension Collapse?

Hi All,

I’ve just got back from work and noticed that the rear divers side strut has dropped extremely low. I think the suspension has collapsed?

I haven’t noticed any driving differences thought I’ve only had the car a month.

Any suggestions on repair and the cost?
I dont have a jack so will have to get a garage to do it annoyingly.

Yes. I had an original front spring break on my E39 525i last year just as I pulled away, exploding right through the tyre. Thankfully it was due for replacement soon anyway.
£300 for two springs, two shocks and labour. Another £200 for tyres.

Change both rears 2011, the other side WILL break at some point too.

Okay will do, very annoying as I’ve only just got it and am also renovating! 🤣 the car is actually a 2016 if that makes any difference so the slightly refreshed version.

Honestly.....bloody kids today. Can't look after anything! :poke:

Only kidding; it probably is a spring broken, as suggested. I regularly checked all springs and dampers when we had it (as I have a jack and is part of regular maintenance IMO).

Invest in a cheap jack, they are not expensive. Then you can see these kind of things, along with many others. You can also clean the insides of the wheels and brake calipers, etc.

Where are you based? Someone on here maybe able to offer some help, it's a fairly simple job?
If you're on a super tight budget someone may have some 'used' ones for sale if they changed them for lowered ones etc.

Yes I need to get one 🤣. I’m about to move house with on street parking though. Will probably comendier the parent’s garage for one though.

I recon pot holes did it. They’re a nightmare around here!

That’s a great idea, didn’t think of buying off here. I’ve seen videos and it doesn’t look to hard to replace. Though compressed springs do seem a bit offputting.

I’m based in the West Midlands. Currently near Stourbridge.
Will shoot a message if I see any of the M sport coils.

I would have offered to help but you're a bit too far.
There's always Autodoc for parts, they often have offers on and the prices are usually good especially if you use their app.

No worries, I’ve shopped around now, will likely just take it to a garage. Thanks for the advice

Can I ask where this was at? Seems to be an insanely good price.

Sorry, I exaggerated, this was on my E39 in 2023 by my local friendly garage in Plymouth. They supplied and fitted KYB shocks and springs; parts £310, labour £80 - £390inc VAT.
They will not replace a clutch or rebuild an engine though.

Have you parked the car on a flat surface and looked again?.

That drive looks sloped and uneven. That can cause a car to sit awkwardly.

Very embarrassing, you’ve hit the nail on the head there mate. Went to a garage and realised my mistake ahahha! Glad as I was being quoted around £800.

At least you have peace of mind and £800 still in the bank. :D

Never go to that garage again. If the barrel spring had been broken, replacement by my local independent is less than £100, including labour.
p.s. The easy check is the height of the rear wheel arches with a metal tape measure on a flat surface - e.g. a petrol station forecourt, if you don't have one at home.
