roughly how many miles was this route?

I left home at 29k exactly on the clock, came back with about 29200.

excluding my route to the meeting points (20-30 miles), it was about 160-170 miles?

Also up for the meal idea - made that remark to Stuart and PVR... The driving is great, but it'd be cool just to get to know people more face to face

Pity we never seem to meet somewhere in the Midlands. Getting to Surrey is an absolute PITA for anyone north of London.

Might have to have a reccy around Rutland Water or somewhere close by for some decent roads, scenery and pubs! At least then it's a bit more central.

Me too, was at uni there and still have loads of friends who live there where I could crash..

Why not head up through the gap between the M1 and M6 from Birmingham - Staffordshire Moorlands, Buxton , Bakewell and then down to Ashbourne

Ok well I may well just start a thread then!

I drove some rural roads near Burton On Trent and Uttoxeter last week - fabulous and hardly a car on them but I wanted to do a reconnaissance run out towards Melton Mowbray and then Rutland looking for some nice scenic rural roads, a good stop-off and photo opportunity/comfort break and some cracking pubs for lunch.

I'll try and get out there in the next couple of weeks with a view to arranging something in the new year.

Any forumites with more detailed knowledge of that neck-of-the-woods are welcome to offer their knowledge!

Ahh PVR you are missing out (particularly Rutland water). Google Hambleton Hall hotel and treat Mrs PVR....and have a look at some of the views!

Top place, spent a couple of days there at the end of September. Not cheap mind. Situated on the Hambleton Penisular in the middle of Rutland Water. Food and service is superb.
