Surprising 0-62 times of past hero cars

Yeah, I love these stats too - my SI will take them all. I also like reading bhp's from the sports cars of the 80's and 90's. I remember drooling over the VW Corrado 2.9 VR6 of the early 90's with its 190 bhp and now mine has almost another 100 on top of that

Wow...
Big fan of the nsx, and hope to own one one day, but shocked at how slow the acceleration is! :-o
Would never have thought my s.i. would be almost 2 seconds faster!

Used to have a poster of the countach on my bedroom wall when I was a kid.... Cant believe that my car is quicker

And yea the nsx that used to be awesome.... My old 2.5 would have shown it up :?

In fact my old x type jag would according to those figures would have given it a decent run.... That can't be right, I reckon they've made a mistake

Whe I was 15 the Lotus Elan Sprint, in Gold Leaf colours, was my dream car and in its day it was fast, a claimed 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. Difficult for me to believe that I now own a car that does that speed in 5.0 seconds. :)

It might also be that some of those cars where held back by tyre technology of that era.
Some of the higher powered 2wd cars might have had traction problems.
still that nsx time looks really slow.

A quick google suggests that the NSX 0-60 times vary between around 6.5 seconds down to 5 seconds depending upon the year of manufacture and the version.

Interesting stats. But unless you plan on ageing your drive train rather quickly then useless outside the pub.

Fascinating thread!

I recently found a write up online from either Car & Driver or Road and Track on a Z4C that recorded 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and 0-100 in 14.0 seconds, and as we all know top speed of 155 mph because of the limiter.

I was born in the black & white TV era and remember reading that an E-Type Jag had done 150 mph and being amazed (at the time my Dad had an Austin A40 Somerset that managed to get to the end of the speedo at 75 mph with me leaning over his shoulder to see it)! I decided then that my second car would be an E-type FHC! (Many years later I read an article that suggested the E-Type in question had a big valve head, higher compression ratio and a few other tweaks)! BTW the E-type never happened!

I also had a Ladybird Book of Cars from 1963 or 1964 that said an Aston Martin (DB4 GT?) could get from 0-100 and back to 0 in under 30 seconds - Wow! (An Aston never happened either)!

Then in my teens I started buying Autocar and Motor magazines, and for many years (nearly a decade IIRC) the quickest car in the road test result pages in Autocar was a Ferrari Daytona with 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and 13.7 for 0-100 (and the standing quarter mile) - that then became my next dream car! (Never got a Daytona either)!

I know that in 40+ years technology has moved on in terms of engines, tyres, aerodynamics and every other area of performance, but here I am with a Z4C that is quicker than my first 2 Heroes and right up with the third - no wonder I love it! And my Z4 isn't even an M!

I would need to win the lottery to buy an E-type, a rollover win for a DB4 GT, and Euromillions win for a Daytona!

But things move on. Now there is the M2 that is quicker than all of my heroes - maybe that should be the next target! AFAIK it is the only M with the option of a manual gearbox so that would work for me! Better get saving.....................!

My 1972 TR6 has theoretically got 150 bhp, 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and does around 25 mpg. My 2012 520 d touring has 184 bhp, 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and does around 50 mpg.

Progress.

I would say those figures were spot on if you looked at the early editions of each model, the LP400S has a 0-60 of 5.9 where the 5000QV is 4.9 seconds (these are the published figures). The attraction of these older sports cars now is not the performance but the whole un-assisted driving experience. Today you can buy an estate car from BMW that breaks 0-60 in under 4.7 seconds and I think that is utterly fabulous :D

I don't know if it's true or not but , the E types target speed for the run was to top 150mph.

The first few tries the car was only getting to 148mph. Until someone suggested removing or folding the mirrors in.

That helped get the extra 2mph.

+1 for BMW diesels. Even old ones with a bit of help can break 5s :) My mate's 140k mile E46 330D + re-map out-guns my 3.0si :(

With a 'quoted' 4.8 0-60 for the E89 35is I'll let the others set off, make a quick cuppa, then smoke them all at the line...brag brag brag... I jest.

It's a great post, very interesting, just shows the progress that has been made, but i'd have that 308 over any BMW all day long.

There aint many bmw's in general that are quicker than 4.8 to be fair the 35is is one of the fastest ever bmw's. These are bmw's figures too many have been known to go faster on 1/4 tracks z4 35is is actually around 4.3s

I saw that article too yesterday and it surprised me as well, I can't believe my diesel barge does it in 5.3 secs and I also had a poster of the countach on my wall( and it's still up at my mums house lol!).

Here's some real world perspective , Just had this conversation with a mate a couple of weeks ago , he was thinking of buying a diesel slk , when I said it wouldn't be that fast he pointed out that the performance and bhp was more or less exactly the same as a Sierra cosworth !
Things have definitely moved on more than we think

I haven't even googled it but the figure of 7.5 for the NSX is definitely completely wrong

A 1980 Audi Quattro quicker than a 1992 Honda NSX? Absolutely no chance.

I race an american drag superstocker in Pro class that hits 1/4 on motor only in 11 seconds (its street legal too) and with a short shot of nitrous its 10's (117mph and 125mph respectivly)

over the years iv lined up in warm ups and cash days racing alongside many many of these 'fast cars' and whilst some have been very quick, most have been way way off the mark to their given 0=60 and 1/4 times.
i remember a new GTR having a go, and to be honest if it wasnt for all they trickery it has, it would have had me, as once those things get going the mid range is insane, but they gust cant launch (mine hits 60foot in 1.6seconds wheels up and tyres wrinkled so i forgive it)
but the red Ferrari 430 scudarea that the owner nearly put money down on, i left it standing. like most.
while not hear to boast about my car thats designed to hook n go, its a mere comparison, to what manufacturers say their car does,

ps, look at old figures of these to impress
plymouth superbird hemi 1970 (200mph road legal car)
dodge hemi dart 1968/69
