Supplying Spark plugs for Main Dealer to fit?

Hi All,

Got the Coupe booked into main dealers for an oil service, went through maindealer discount and got it for £143 which whilst not as cheap as doing it myself it is the cheapest way of keeping my Mondial Warranty alive.

The car hesitates quite a bit on cold start up, the Sparks are 5-6 years old now so I am looking to replace. On my 03 Roadster I replaced them myself with NGK's, I was considering asking the main dealer for the price to do this during its service but its pretty steep.

Has anyone on hear had any joy with providing components such as Spark plugs and asking BMW to fit during the service? I would intend to buy the non BMW branded NGK iridiums. but not sure how BMW would react to that, just not sure I want to pay £15+ per spark plug when I can get the same for £6 each online.

Everytime I try and get the dealers to look at the hesitations under the warranty its always no fault found sir... so I have given up on that route.

BMW will refuse point blank to fit any non standard part, period - well that's the stance of my local stealer.

Best to purchase a spark plug tool + extension & DIY, then they'll be on there when serviced
 
Changing spark plugs on a Zed is fun and easy. I went with the Iridiums and changed them myself. It's very rewarding to be working under the bonnet, and it will only take an hour.
 
I just had my Inspection 2 done (which includes having the spark plugs replaced) at my local dealer. I always supply all of the consumables (filters, spark plugs, etc.) and they have never had any issue - although I do provide OEM replacements I've sourced elsewhere for down to a third of the quoted price.

Bottom line is you may as well ask them! 8)
 
If it doesn't form part of the next service required I see no issue in changing them yourself. If they are due the service after then you would have to change them again though.

Agree. I dropped BMW long ago. I don't bring my own parts, but the place I go doesn't care if you do.

+1 changing the spark plugs on these cars is child's play... even easier than doing the 4 on an Abarth 500!!
 
i would do it myself if your concerned, just make sure you use the right plugs and the electrode gap is correct.
 
If something goes wrong afterwards, you'll have no comeback if you supply parts. Its a different story if they did everything, they are obliged to fix it.

I have changed plugs on numerous cars in the past including my 03 Z4 roadster and am happy to do it myself.

My only concern was in trying to keep the BMW warranty in tact which I pay £30 a month for. My concern was that if I did it myself I could potentially void the warranty.

I got a quote of BMW for them to supply and fit, total cost (including parts and labour discount) was £152!!!! I certainly wont be proceeding to have it done during this service!

I do wonder sometimes whether I should cancel the BMW warranty and take my chances... costing me over £300 a year and even more if you consider I have to get BMW dealers to carry out the service.

Just change them yourself, how are they going to know, you can get NGK spark plugs with BMW written on them in case you're worried that when it comes time to claim on warranty they check your spark plugs :)
