Supercharger for the N52

This is a kit for a different engine.

This is for the n52, so the facelift z4. For the m54 ESS has had kits for ages.

Arma developed a kit for the n52 as well. Think they ran into a fair few issues though.
Yes, something to do with the compressor/blades desintegrating/falling apart, or something like that.

There's a lot about the N52 that I haven't taken the time to fully understand, as I don't have a car with an N52. I have read there were issues on the N52 with pulling vacuum to activate the bypass valve when off throttle. Arma kits had catastrophic failure of the supercharger unit itself. This can occur when running a supercharger without a bypass. Total conjecture, but it's plausible that Arma kits blew up for that reason. Their website is somewhat vague about what their bypass/blowoff entails.

If the bypass truly was a roadblock, I don't see why someone wouldn't have used an electronic bypass. It's not the most efficient way to do things, but it would work.

Something o do with the lack of throttle body since the N52 is valvetronic

I won't pretend to know.

The arma units were just shoddy and poorly manufactured from what I've seen.
Which was enough to put me off.

Either way, Guido gets my salute for doing this.

The n52 still has a throttle body ;)

But the question is: is it still used as a throttle body? ;)
Or is it like the m52TU (which has both a gas cable operated TB and an electrical TB) a needed part for the esp system? (valvetronic maybe not fast enough?)

I have no idea how ESS controls the overpressure when throttle is cut. I'm not even sure if I see a BOV/vacuum valve spot on the kit (the pieces on the workbench). I see 1 hole that fits something. But that might as well be the MAF/MAP sensor.
Maybe they place an electronic valve that is controlled by the tank vent valve?
I don't even know if this kit is alpha-n or maf/map...
Im interested to know what ESS exactly has made :)

Nice to see bmwZ taking the plunge :)
I wonder (seeing he lives in norway) if he lives near Aremark so Hans kan pop over to help him if things get complicated  Hans is awesome

But I still don't see how ESS is going to make money off this kit, even though it is comparatively expensive. But they probably know their numbers.

I have not gotten the instructions yet, they will send it to my email. So not updatet on how they operate this... Let you know when I got the instructions..

Yes, Hans is awesome. He helped me with my old 2.2 Supercharged

.

I know that, which is why I stated the actual engines and Z4 variants for the M54... NeilMick's post stated that ESS hadn't fitted a kit for the z4, my point was they had developed them, and one had been fitted to the Alpina variant of the z4 (the M52). Unless you are saying that doesn't count?

Oh, and right back atcha with the text emphasis. :poke:

Ok, I'm pretty close to have an supercharged N52 right now. I will pick up my Z at ESS this week, and then it will be supercharged.

I thought I would install myself, but ESS wanted to install it. They are using my car as a mole for the Z4 kit :)

Looking forward to this

I'm sure they'll do a good job.

Try to get some inside info on what they are working on currently :)

When I delivered the car, they had a C63 AMG that they tested a supercharger kit for. Also the nice 135i hatch with 1M fenders and 500hp where there.

They had dynoed my car friday and got around 220hp stock. Always nice with an before and after dyno :)

220whp is pretty good for stock. It's a few hp off their stock drivetrain correction factor (0,15), but all dyno correction factors are very coarse estimates.
Before/after is always best, then you can see whp gain.
