Sunny glorious day = No top down because....

After spending 6 hrs detailing yesterday and glorious sunshine would normally mean topless (of course). But with only 500 miles on clock and joining the M61 getting up to speed and bang!!! Stonechip? More like a wheel nut or something heavier and result is below. Fuming is putting it mildly

Bloody hell that's crap luck Channy, I guess the only upside is it's the windscreen and not the bonnet/bodywork etc, still very annoying nonetheless. :(

Extremely annoying and upsetting. I hate getting a new windscreen with the associated risks.

The only new screen I needed was on the X5, and BMW did that as Autoglass (fortunately) said they could not do it.

Now I am worrying if the windscreen repairer will scratch the car after taking so long detailing it or worse yet ruin the seals.

Can anyone recommend a good windscreen repairer or best take it to official BMW repair shop?

Check your insurance - Admiral allowed the dealer to fit the £2k windscreen …

I'd go with pvr's advice if they'll do it Channy, mobile autoglass came round to change a screen on my MR2 once and made a total f**k up of it, prised screw buttons out with a screwdriver and kinked the plastic and the seal was too long and came loose and started flapping about on the motorway and scratched the roof. Does'nt mean this would happen to you obviously and I don't mean to piss you off even more mate but for-warned etc.. Take your time and get it sorted right IMO.

I just had a screen replaced on my little Smart Diesel by Autoglass (on behalf of Admiral) ... the screen is ok but the initial fitting was poor. They sorted it without issue and whilst nothing was scratched they neglected to replace a washer meaning the front wing was loose wing is plastic and the trim to hold it in turn sits against the screen. The bloke who did it obviously rushed.

As I say, nothing scratched but the trim was not 'treated' well with clips forced and nothing done gently. The screen is ok but be careful with the fitting - the bloke who sorted the issues seemed much more switched on than the original fitter. I do think, however, that a lot of this was down to it being a little plastic Smart Fortwo. I would like to think if it was a 500 mile Z4 that 100% care would be taken !!

I would push to get your dealer to do it but ask them if its done inhouse or they might farm it out to Autoglass or the like anyways. The screen should be straightforward but its normally the rain sensor that gets screwed and not work as well as before, hence I would go BMW to be certain of no future warranty issues.

Tim.

ouch... But try to be positive... Least it was the windshield and not the body work.... Or worst a headlight!

I had autoglass on my Z a few years ago.... And aside from my supplying a BMW seal it was done without complaints.

But why no top down????
+1 :scratchhead:

I'm guessing that with the top down the windscreen is under a bit more strain (especially at speed) which could increase the likelihood of the chip cracking? Or there's another reason I haven't thought of :)

Yes correct. Top down means all load is massing in the corner where the crack is. I could see it get longer until I put the top back up. For the last 10 miles the crack stopped spreading and car has been sat in garage since Tuesday.

National Windscreen are out tomorrow so will be watching like a hawk. If he/she can do a good job without scratching the trim (especially the A pillar Gloss Black covers and interior) or the paint then I will be a happy chap. Fingers crossed. :|
