Summer hols

This summer I’m planning on packing up the z with the tent and the girlfriend and heading south for a few weeks, the rough plan is to drive down through France with the intention of stopping for a few days in the Morzine/Les Gets areas. I know that area well so mountain biking and white water rafting are on the cards, following that we plan to head further south and explore the coast around Cannes/Monaco although nothing is fixed in stone.
The question is have any of you fellow forum visitors got any experience of this area of France, I’m sure there are going to be campsites but do I need to book in advance? Also are there any must see attractions/areas that may not be on the general tourist trail and cannot be missed?
Looking forward to driving all the way down through the alps once the flat boring bit of France is out of the way.

There is no "boring bit of France". France is by far the most fabulous country on the planet, and I have traveled pretty much everywhere except for Australia. The U.S. Southwest is a close second. If you are traveling in Southern France during July and August then you're f**ed since the whole country moves south for a couple of months. Go to Paris in August it's the time of the year to visit.

thinking of takin me my zed and partner to south of france summer 2010,so looking
forward to looking to the replys you get,as this may help me,thanks pmeloche,
prmeloche you must do australia, lived there for 2.5 years,(first class),robb

Go anywhere you like in France and it will be fantastic. Do Paris in August as said. It's hot and empty as locals have all gone. Even parking is free :) (Used to live there - well St Germain)

Avoid the auto routes unless you just have to get A to B fast. Pick B roads and drift.

For me the South coast is almost not France, just an expensive strip of hotels and bars.

Campsites are best booked as peak season they will be solid, although if you're talking 2 man ridge tent less problem.

Guide books are better than forums for this stuff really as you can plot what you want. For me it's Britanny and its coast, Loire valley is great, Dordogne and foothills of the Pyrenees.

Just returning from my trip to france. mainly northern and paris. DIdnt like the roads through as they were too straight for my liking. scenery good. I prefer roads like in scotland where they are bends, straight and more curves. u can do what u want. Probably didnt go to the proper roads. did a drive from brussels to paris avoiding motorways(autoroutes). unfortunatly the roads were too straight. any advice please regarding the routes. planning to go again later this summer. cheers
