Suggestions for a good multimeter please.

For arguements sake lets pretend I know nothing about electricity, but fancy having a tool to show if batteries are dead, electical connections are live etc. What's a good starting point? Thought about trying to find a multimeter forum .com , but thought I'd check in with you guys first. Thanks in advance. :hattip:

Fluke, i have had mine over 25 years and its still great, not cheap though

Worth the brass for an occasional user? I'm a desk jockey by trade, so it's mainly going to live on the shelf - anything less pricey?

Do you really mean a 'good' one as per the title or something recommended to start with?

Like these guys I have a cracking good one over 20 years old, but I'd recommend something for a Tenner from Maplins. Measure in scales from 2 to 250 volts in Ac/DC , resistance, small amperage, etc. should be just fine to start with. When you get clever with it then go spend

agreed on the maplins cheap job, mines done me proud for poking about in my 205 gti and general testing of batteries / electrical stuff around the house

If its just for kicking around on the shelf and testing the odd PP3 and auto stuff - Just get one for under a tenner from machine mart - If you bust it you're not going to loose any sleep!

If its just for general use and its not a tool of your trade, then it will be perfectly adequate. Plus the fact its not costing you an arm and a leg. The Clarke stuff I've used is ok.
