Sucky iPod/Phone Holder ... In a good way.

Just recently picked up this unit from the bargain bin at one of the local auto accessories stores.
Obviously it's just another iPod/phone holder, but I like this one because it attaches with a lever-activated suction cup and can easily be removed or replaced at any time without (theoretically) leaving any marks. It has a universal joint that allows the iPod to be positioned at (almost) any convenient angle.

You can see the suction cup bit and lever behind the iPod in the photo. The widget attached to the bottom of the iPod is an FM transmitter. I know the common knowledge is that FM transmitters don't sound good, but this one does an excellent job. The USB cable charges from the car's lighter socket.

I was concerned that it'd fall off after a few days because the surface of the dash is a bit curved, but it's held solidly for a week now, so it'll probably be OK. There's some kind of gel on the suction cup that allows it to seal effectively on uneven surfaces.

Kinda neat, I thought.

thats the same place i fasten my sat nav, i have the piano trim, i would have thought it was not possible to stick to the aluminium dash, as ever - wrong again

i wonder if it would fasten to the leather dash
I tried it on the rough-textured black part, but it didn't hold very well. It's seriously stuck to the brushed aluminum though.

Most of these holder thingies seem to use double sided tape, and I really wasn't keen on sticking anything like that to the dash. I'm happy with being able to pop it on or off without leaving goo or marks.

There's also the type that's on a gooseneck connected to the 12V lighter plug ... but that just seemed like it would be a nuisance.

The Z4 dash does not provide many locations for mounting things like this, does it.

will have to try my sat nav there as I also thought it would not stick.
fed up with the olympic rings on the screen

I use this on my Piano Black for the TomTom, seems pretty good to me

Yeah, it's surprising just how good those lever operated suction cups are really. The one I have on the GoPro holds the camera dead still at over 100mph even on curved bodywork (on the outside of the car).

My GoPro suction cup worked perfectly at 160mph on my zx6r in the Isle of Man last year!! Those things are amazing! :D :D

Oooopps this is a very old post!

After seeing ZeeFore's above post, I've been on the hunt for a cheap IPhone holder for my dash. Once in a while, I need GPS directions, so having a dash holder makes it safer to use my phone for navigation than holding it in my hand. After searching 6 stores, I found one with a locking suction cup and rotating grip for $6, with a lifetime warranty. I tested it today and it works great. It is sold by Big Lots. http://www.biglots.com/

Note the position of the suction cup. It took me a few tries to get the device to adhere to my dash, but higher seems to work better than lower on the dash. Now I need to find a 5 foot IPhone cable to connect it to my MediaBridge. The grips open very wide, and open all the way with the push of a button. I have my IPhone 4S in a Griffin Survivor (mil spec) case and had 1-2 inches of additional space with the grips fully open.
