Not all young drivers are so reckless...and I've seen ppl including older zed owners on hoons do some pretty scary stuff!

We all mis judge things and make mistakes, take a corner quicker than we meant to, overtake when we really shouldn't, but not all of us are simpletons who only want to use the loud pedal. On every meet I've attended I've always felt that if I was out on a hoon alone I would not be going as quick as I am in a group feeling I had to keep up. Again not putting anyone down as they are great, but on some lil roads particularly in north Wales there's been times where I've seen the older guys pull off some overtakes that are a little bit stupid really.

For me the reason I'm not always going 10 tenths is that I don't want to lose it and ruin my car as I'd never be able to insure another one again, my grandad was hit on his motorbike by someone speeding on a b road which pretty much effed his life up, and having a mrs who's dad is an ex traffic cop means I've heard many stories of how badly it can go wrong

I'm not the best driver, and like I said we all do make mistakes and mis judge things and have close calls

The issue is a mix of reckless ppl old and young who are persistently selfish drivers, and in my experience the arseholes on the road are usually older

I totally understand the higher premiums for young ppl
As experience on the road counts for a lot!!
But sometimes older guys do some stupid things...as do young ones too I agree

Just don't want everyone to be tarnished with same brush

I think the point Woots makes about hoons is a good one - though in a different way for me. I've actually rarely felt the need to catch up as they have been very well led, by drivers who mix the pace at the front and do not push hard from behind. I have seen, and once or twice taken, risky overtakes, but generally I feel more confidence in pushing the car's capabilities a bit more because you have cars in front and behind that are very similar and you can 'drive off' them, if that makes sense. I am always more tentative hooning on my own because I know I am no racing driver, and like Woots this is my only car and I'd never manage to get another if I binned it through my own stupidity

Though when I had blueflash the brakes would cook after a while...but containing all that power prob needed carbon brakes and a parachute...

It's a good point that Woots makes on the Forum runs. I observed one member on here, not really active now, who I won't name, drive like a total arse and carry out two or three really, really stupid and inconsiderate overtakes. It gives the rest of us a bad name.

I think people should observe CJ and SammyZ (two examples who spring to mind). The way they mix safe, responsible driving with some good fun hooning is a great example.

This is why I also prefer solo or 2-3 person hoons, as you can get a feel for how a few want to drive and drive accordingly - and you don't have 10-20 zeds peeing off the same horsebox/pickup driver (simply by overtaking I mean, not by harassing them).

Despite all this, I still got a ticket on Saturday for what the TrafPol said was a perfectly safe & appropriate overtake...just a bit too fast

Although thankfully - and probably due to my attitude - he did use the lower end of his readings for the ticket

This is a reason why I will probably not go on a meet.
Don't get me wrong I drive quite spirited sometimes, probably too often, but people showing off could potentially get someone killed.

Honestly, I have never seen anything done on a meet that you don't see other drivers doing day in day out, and what I have seen has been very limited. We're not racing each other, you don't overtake other members of the group or piss around, and 99% of the driving is just fine in my experience. It's not for some people though, I get that.

Sorry - incorrect - stats say the highest percentage of accidents are actually involving people between 50 and 60.

I feel this is probably wrong. Insurance surely reflects risk and my insurance is £270 this year, I am over 50. I think that is probably relatively cheap.

That's somewhat misleading then. Age groups don't match..I.e
20-29 = 1671
There isn't one for 40-49 or 50-59 so they are lumped together....it is likely to be 8-900 per age group..so nearly half the 20-29

If it had been a miserable trafpol then I'd be looking at a summons for the speed I was clocked at. So I still consider my polite & contrite attitude to be a licence saver

so 40-59 is a 19 rear range, and is 1735
so if we use the same 19 year range
17-36 is over 2800 going on 100 per year in the 30's.
looks like your SAC course figures were incorrect then, and the fact that I am in my 50's and my premium has never been lower strengthens it..

When I was 17-24 I paid stupid premiums, because I now realise I also drove stupid, but at the time always denied it...
