Style 108 help / opinions

I’m having a bit of an issue with my 108’s, when I purchased the car I was made aware of a potential issue with the wheels, however due to the circumstances of the purchase and the price I was paying for the car I decided it was something I’d look in to later... Last week I bought some winter wheels so now the 108’s are off the car I decided to take a look at what the issue actually was.

So what I was made aware of was the rim bolts were not all sitting at the same height and had been like this since the wheels had been refurbished. on inspection some bolts appeared to be loose, so i grabbed a splined socket and went round them all one by one. Some were loose but tightened up, however some wouldn’t tighten up at all and when I removed them I could clearly see the threads had been stripped, this wasn’t the most alarming thing, 2 bolts on one of the front wheels gave way with the slightest of touches, the heads had been super glued in place. :o

So now I’m in a quandary over what to do. In total if I want to repair (helicoil) them il need to do 27 out of 80 bolts and that’s if the other bolts come out ok... if I do repair them I’m not sure how safe they’ll be once they’re done, and if I don’t repair them, what do I do with them? Will they be good to anyone for spares or should I just chuck them away or would anyone buy them to repair them selfs?

All advice and opinions welcome.

Thanks in advance.

108s can be a absolute bitch  the odd bolt that doesn't function wouldn't concern me ( they have 20 per wheel & many other sets of split rims have 16 so clearly you don't need them all for 100% safety ) but 27 fails from 80 is a different matter .
You are into a potential situation where the cost to fix the set will far outweigh their actual worth :(
Sounds to me like you would be better off buying a different set & writing these off as they sound like the makings of a true time bandit

Yeah that’s pretty much what I’m thinking, it’s a shame coz I really like the wheels. Do you think they’d be worth anything to anyone? Even just for the remaining bolts?

I’d tend to agree. As nice as they are , I’d write this particular set off. You’d probably get something back on the bay etc

I'd be interested in taking some or all of them off you Beefy, save them going to waste / scrap. Where are you based?

That could be a plan, I’m in Dumfries, Scotland. I’m still undecided on what to do but I’ll give you first refusal if I decide to get rid of them.

Thank you. You're a bit of a distance away but I'm sure we could sort something out regarding shipping

I'm just so glad I sold the 108s on my 2nd Coupe while they were still in good condition. :)

But OP, if you plan to get another set of 108s it might be worth keeping the bolts out of these just in case - I'm pretty sure someone said they cost about £5 each!
