Stutter and Engine Light

Hi all,

3 days into Z4 ownership and I already have a bit of an issue. I have spoken to the dealer I bought the car from already, but wanted to try and do a bit of my own research as well.

I was driving home yesterday and I was steadily accelerating in 2nd gear when the engine seemed to stutter/ splutter at around 1800 - 2000rpm and then the engine light came on. Prior to this, I had noticed a bit of hesitation at similar revs the day before but didn't really think anything of it.

I turned the engine off and then tried it again, the light hasn't come back on and I haven't had the issue again yet. However, after only owning the car 3 days I have already lost a bit of confidence in its reliability?

Has anyone ever had a similar issue?

Give it back to them and let them fix it.

I had a hesitation for a fraction of a second a few times but at steady speed - that turned out to be a VANOS solenoid, cheap and easy fix. Even if the EML turns off the fault will still be stored so will be easy to recall.
 
Could be split in the air intake, faulty spark plugs, coils or camshaft sensor all cheap easy fix's but as said take it back to them the EML is pretty serious it wouldn't just appear suddenly. It's could be the reason it was traded in. Take it back get them to do all diagnostic checks on it and read fault codes then fix it as they should
 
Mine did something similar a while ago, under reasonable stress it sort of coughed a little, followed by the management light
This was fixed with new spark plugs which were soon due anyway
 
Thanks all, just trying to get a bit of background on what the issue might be so I'm better informed in case the dealer tries to spin me a story.

It's just had the Inspection 2 service 1,000 miles ago so shouldn't be spark plugs as they would have been changed?
 
Yes they should have been. Either way they should be able to read what caused the code. If they tell you they can't because it was transient then I wouldn't believe them. They can spin you what they like but you've noted the fault and if it comes back they will have to do more work. Keep good records of everything they say/do in case you need it later.
