STUPID QUESTION WARNING: Getting it wet

I always keep roof up when parked - Especially given the fact the roof goes up and down so quickly.
If i'm stopped at a pub for example and about 2 feet away from the Z, I've no hesitation to leave the roof down.....If it's out of my line of site though the roof is always up!!

I've heard some horror stories of what people come back to after leaving their roof down....not worth the risk in my opinon

Happy to help :D
Like others have said, about the only way I'll leave the top down is if I'm close to the car and can see it the whole time. At a car meetup like pistonheads/carsandcoffee etc I'll leave the top down because car enthusiast's tend to be respectful of others property....of course I'll take all my electronic gizmo's out and lock them either in the trunk or center compartment.

There's so much electronics in a car nowadays I really wouldn't risk it. Leather seats are probably the most resilient item in the cockpit but your stereo etc aren't water proof, water pooling in the ash tray and 12v supply with fire potential around any of the electronics. It might be a very worse case but it could happen, and that's not even counting the potential for crime, a lowered roof is like a magnet to street urchins and scroats.

Personally I always close mine up when it's out of sight, it's just another thing to worry about for the sake of 10 seconds to raise the roof, the only reason to leave it down is to show off the car, but I am a tart so appreciate that aspect 8)

I'm not confirming, nor denying that this may play a part in it.....lol

Put the roof up. It is not exactly a chore given it is electric and takes 20 seconds.

Another car I had years ago I used to leave the hood down on constantly and often came back to it being used as a bin... only time I ever found it to be a good thing was when someone had thrown away a half eaten sandwich when I came out of a club (you know what the munchies are like!). Worst thing was some bloke pissing in it. I would recommend roof up always.

I think you're missing what I'm saying - I'd NEVER leave it with the top down in places where this could ever happen.

I'm talking about in the secured work carpark... my fathers pub... girlfriends private carpark.
Things like it getting used for a bin, or a urinal, just aren't going to happen in anywhere I'd consider leaving the top down.
I sure as hell wouldn't leave it down when I'm going out for the night - I think that's just asking for it to get nicked / abused!

The question was solely over what I could expect to happen if it got wet from rain - not from chips and curry sauce, or "refined Fosters"... :D

I probably leave mine down more than I should... the other consideration that I don't think has been mentioned, I won't leave the roof down if it's somewhere dusty! Especially gravel drives / car parks or the beach.

Thankfully the only times I've been caught in the rain I've been driving!

It's such an open ended question though, The basic answer is it 'could' do nothing, but it 'could' start an electrical fire and burn the car to the ground, or anything in between those two scenarios.
(the chances are very slim, but it 'could')

No one can tell you until it happens, putting the roof up removes the chance of it happening.

Was out with a colleague in LA a while back.... we'd gone for lunch in his 335i convertable and we parked in a fairly large strip mall.

When we got out to go eat in a restaurant where he would have no visability of his car... he just left the roof down. He also left his shades, breafcase and all sorts of crap just out and visible in the car with no concern for it at all....

when I asked him what the hell u doing? He just laughed at me for being paranoid... sure enough when we got back to his car.. no problems, nothing missing....

makes u wonder really.... LA is full of scum.... but he felt comfortable enough leaving it like that..... ahhh dont u just love the UK!

Not much. Most likely thing is the windows steaming up inside more because of the moisture. A bit of water is not going to cause much damage although if it isn't quick to dry out the car will start to smell... sodden carpets, mildew etc. I got a VX220 soaked somewhere in France when I left the top off overnight. Had to drive for hours with a wet arse as the water had soaked into the sponge of the seat. Took ages to get the car dry inside when I got back. It was a miserable journey back stopping off at service stations and drying out my pants under the hand dryer in the toilet with people clearly thinking I had pissed myself.
