Stupid Question for M Owners

I drove one of the original SMG boxes and I hated it ... would never buy it, but I was just curious if the replacement Z would get something similar again (although improved)

SMG-I was garbage as was SMG Cruise (the SMG offered on non-Ms). I quite like SMG-II.

BMW is currently developing a DSG equivalent that will replace SMG in the future.

I read in this week's AutoExpress that Mercedes will allow their AMG team to develop and build a car to compete with the Audi R8. Perhaps BMW will follow suite and allow Motorsport to develop a car from scratch??
