Stupid multi-function wheel & cruise control questions

I'm interested in getting both eventually. Am I right in thinking that the mf steering wheel retrofit kit is easier to come by than a whole new wheel? Does the kit give you cruise control buttons on the steering wheel, and if so, do you still need the cruise control stalk?

Thanks! :-)

MFSW and Cruise Control are two separate things I think. I've never heard of the, coming together as a kit.

BMW were selling the cruise stalk on their eBay site the other week.

Most people go for a second hand MFSW without the airbag and just swap the whole wheel. There are 2 types of MFSW; the fat "M" version that is all black or the standard sport version that has the chrome spokes. The "M" MFSWs go for around £200 or more second hand and the chrome spoked MFSWs can be had for £150 or less.

The multi-function kit gives you all the bits to add to your existing wheel but the job will take longer and probably cost more than a wheel swap.

Pre facelift cars manufactured before Setember 2003 usually need one small 'retrofit cable' in addition to the second hand wheel. You can buy these from the stealer or just make one yourself. If your car is 2004 or later then your slip ring should be pre-wired and the new wheel is just plug and play. Ignore any bollocks about programming the wheel will just work once installed.

Recommend the M wheel as its nice and chunky. Easy retrofit, just watch your airbag light afterwards as it may need resetting.

Cruise is simple cut-away-some-cowling type job, but if you look to the left where it will fit I think I'm right in saying you'll see markings for it on the plastic for you to follow.

If your airbag light comes on you've something wrong. Battery disconnection and wait 20mins before removing airbag as per very good guide here...

Cruise is something I will be doing in spring / summer... However just looked on eBay and the "cruise control installing set" is £241.01 :o

And they have the cheek to charge £2.95 postage on that !

They picture the steering column cowling and the stalk, and the stalk is about £60 from Sopers is it not ? On facelift cars you need the loom, which is not specified that I can see. Modifying the cowling is a simple cut away that is already marked... What a rip off...

Yup - pre-facelift have the loom, facelift do not. Having said that, mine is early facelift so maybe the loom is still there. It still has the roof latch and wires for the speakers that aren't speakers in the doors... Must check. That would make my day.

Question - anyone know how the cool comes off ?

Ask wee bing. His age are the arbiters of cool. None of our kids think we're cool, only the car.

Oh, hang on...

Bloody iPad :x

Funny, but completely unhelpful Stu... Though perhaps he is small enough to get in and have a look.

Gonna go have a look now - decided cleaning the car would be stupid. And cold.

Thanks for all the info guys :-) I keep having more and more things go wrong with my car lately, so any upgrades will have to wait unfortunately :-( I will def keep a lookout for the M wheel with multi controls. In case I never find one, what would the cost of a new one be? Crazy money?

Bing - my 2005 did not have the loom. Jamie from Sopers sold the stalk & loom for about £80-90 delivered & I Dremelled the cowling, though despite some saying it's easy to wire up the sparky who fitted mine said thee were 4/5 different variants of Z4 loom. Depends if u have all the sparky test gear, enjoy the sun today, I am coz will be off to Egham in 2 hours round the 25... happy days
