Stuck in a rut?

I think the OP's problems are a sign of the times, and can affect all young men/women due to job insecurity, and that's the start of people's problems

You have my sympathy OP :(

Nice posts again.

I do need to figure out what I want to do really. That is a hard bit.

Gym is fine, like I said I do enjoy the time I spend there, I only do weights and I always mix it up so I rarely ever do the same session twice.

You should try some cardiovascular work at the gym! When I got home from work last night I went for a 30 minute run before dinner. I felt good after it and actually slept really well last night. :)

Funny that, I enjoy the work but I h-a-t-e the gym as it is so boring. For me that is when it is depressing cycling away or pushing weights. I do that now 3 - 4 times a week, and the only enjoyment is when I close that door behind me.

Each to their own ...

Try a fitness class or circuit training! Much more motivational than the gym. One of my qualifications is Gym instructor level 2 and I haven't been in a gym for 2 years now! I too find them boring to work out in and boring to work in!! :P

They have their uses though, but not every day!

A while back  I used to go to some of the circuit classes at the gym in work at lunchtime - agree they are very good, but largely depend on the person taking the class for that added bit of motivation (i.e. when they shout at you) :D

It may not help, but, try going out with a woman of dubious character   :)

Now Shabba....I've re-read your post and am going to suggest something really girlie and contentious, so anyone who thinks it a load of bollox can hush the f*ck up because this is based on experience!

I had exactly the same symptoms as you a while back, so I think the first thing is you should do is go down the chemists and buy a packet of those pee sticks that diabetics use - forget what they are called but they measure blood sugar and ketones. You only have ketones in your blood when you are burning body fat, but I'm willing to bet you get the lowest levels on BOTH....I did.

The reason is that, although you think you are eating healthily (as did I), if you are consuming lots of fruit, root vegetables etc.., including salad veg like tomatoes, all that stuff is LOADED with sugar, and its that you burn, not body fat. So as soon as you exert yourself and burn off the sugar hit, you've nothing left because your body says "whoa I'm not burning fat cos I need that, all he feeds me is sugary stuff"..net result, you feel dizzy and light-headed and need another food (sugar) fix...

So what I did was followed my wifes example and went on the good old-fashioned Atkins diet. Now I know what you'll say, which is that there WAS no science to support it and Atkins died of a heart attack.....well in fact he slipped on the ice and broke his skull, and theres now plenty of supporting science for the low-carb approach, so lets knock that on the head (no pun intended!!).

You cut out spuds, pasta, bread and all that stuff and eat meat, cheese, eggs, bacon, cream in your coffee (yes!), non-root vegetables and so on (get the book, it tells you better than I can)....you do this for a short, sharp shock period, normally 2-4 weeks, during which your body says "hey! suddenly I'm getting all this good fat s**t so its OK to burn some of my own cos I know I'll get another fat fix shortly!" and your metabolism changes completely as a result. You can keep on that stage for longer if you want to lose more weight, but there are another 6-7 stages, during which you reintroduce sensible levels of sugary and other foods as appropriate, monitoring the effect until you reach a balance.

Now what I can tell you is this - it works far better for men than women, who have to stick at it longer. My wife lost about 18 lbs in eight weeks and has gone down two dress sizes...she has never felt or looked better. I started it when I got back from Jordan about three weeks ago and have lost 10 lbs already with no exercise or effort. I haven't had that dizzy feeling once and I don't miss the carb stuff at all....in fact I eat MORE than I did (as does my wife) and its all good s**t - I feel great.

The science also shows that it LOWERS the bad LDL cholesterol as well, again because your body doesn't feel the need to retain it.

The only slightly bad news is that you may feel quite tired during the first two weeks as your body is going through quite a big metabolic change, but that passes and these days I feel fantastic! Oh and all that stuff about bad breath and farting is a crock of sh1t!

Have a look at it Shabba and see if it fits your lifestyle - you've nothing to lose mate and it might just sort this thing out for you.....the gym is almost certainly exacerbating the problem if your diet is indeed sugar-heavy (natural or man-made)....

Diet could be the problem, but stay away from those "celeb diets" as they work short term and you will loose weight, but it won't last and it may not cure your problem if it is diet related!

You don't sound like you need to have a diet that looses weight, but gives you more energy with your workouts included. More balance.

Anyone at your gym that can give you a diet plan?

Ok as for the women thing, I have no problems meeting women or getting sex if I want it, have alot of barriers up so unlikely to find a girl I want to be with properly but female company is not really a problem area for me, alot of female friends etc.

I did try those sticks once I think, came back ok but will try again.

As for diet, problem is I have a ridiculous metabolisim, I really struggle to keep my weight up, if I drop my intake even a little then it tends just to drop off me. I.e I had 3 weeks of eating not much/normal persons amount while on holiday, lost about 4-5lb and it will take me probably 6 weeks to put that back on on a 7 meal, 4000 est a day calorie diet. I fear if I cut carbs out I'd lose tons of weight and not be able to put it back for ages?

Are you eating enough? With your stats it sounds as if you have reasonable muscle mass.

Mind you, 4000 cals a day is high!

Try this: http://www.thecolumn.org/how-many-calories-do-i-need.asp

The average male needs roughly 2,500 cal a day to keep going, more if you are active.

This is roughly split like this:

60% of calories from carbs
10% from protein
30% from fat (less than 10% saturated).

If your working out, have your carbs before your workout during the day as they give more energy, and less after (assuming the workout is in the evening/late afternoon). Increase the protein towards the end of the day to assist muscle repair.

Diet is like this....

7am Mass shake with added protien (125g carbs, 50g pro)

8am Cerial bar

9am pasta bake large portion, tuna or chicken/turkey

10am portion of fruit

11am large portion of chilli con-carne with lean mince

1pm large portion of cassarole, loaded with meat, veg and lentils

2pm - cake item, usually from healthy eating range

3pm - portion of fruit

4:30pm another large meal like pasta, cassarole, chill or left over roast dinner

5pm - maybe another small bit of fruit

8pm - dinner such as chicken and rice

10pm - another Mass shake with protien

Must add up to 200-250g of protien, and 400g+ of carbs, enough for my weight surely. Its damm expensive haha! All home cooked, low saturated fat. Eat a little less at the weekends mealwise and a bit more cakey items sometimes. I do NO CV at all, I find it too counter-productive as I'm trying to gain weight.

Sounds OK.

I myself would struggle to eat that much, but I am at a desk job during the day!

I currently teach 14 hours of cardio classes a week on top of my day job so I can pretty much eat what I want! :P
