Stubby fitment

Ok... So I tried for about two hours today to remove the stock aerial from my zed, to finally fit my shitreon replacement stubby.

Looking at the new replacement, the old one should just unscrew.. right?
Well, I have tried twisting with my hands, twisting with a set of molegrips, dousing in penetrating and easing oil several times, gently heating and cooling.... all the tricks.
How did you all remove yours, and what the heck am I doing wrong? lol

Just unscrewed mine by hand, a few people have had the same prob. Left to unscrew and right to tighten.

Yes, very easy on my car(s) but then they were quite a bit newer when I replaced them. I think the metal has seized in your case. You seemed to have done all the things that I would have tried though (oils etc).

The last thing you want of course is for it to all break off ...

Spot on. definately don't want that headache for a £9 part!

I think i'm going to wrap a maskingtape cone around the gap and spray a butt tonne of penetrator in and leave it overnight to see if it works through
(obviously, I'm going to put plastic coverings around it so I don't discover my paint has been eaten over night ;))

Oh - I hate these problems as the escalate to a broken part, scratched wing, respray :poke:

I know it's the blinding obvious but you do realise it undoes about 1" up from the base?
All I can suggest is hold the base firmly with a molegrip type tool and cloth around the base to avoid damage then turn the aerial with a tight gripping tool. Do be prepared for the bolt to sheer though

hehe.. yah I'm aware of where it seperates, although I will admit to looking on realOEM to doublecheck after it didn't just give after the first 15 minutes!
I seriously want to avoid the sheering, as again from what realOEM shows, it's not exactly a think screw!

gah... I'll let you know if the overnight lubing helps.

There is no way in hell that any penetrating oil will get to the bolt thread.

You won't like it but if my suggestion above does not shift it then I'd saw the aerial off 1/2" above the join and pare away until I was down to the bolt. Once the fox can see the chicken it all becomes easier.

I also like s this approach because there's no going back :)

... and you like it as it is not your car :D

Agreed though - once all the rubber has been cut away, you will just be left with a seized bit of metal stuck in the base.

Mine came off easy enough... and I'm less then novis at stuff like this.

Any chance your prev owner might have super glued it to prevent it from being stolen??

i had the same problem with mine, except it basically disintegrated when I took it apart - i used a dishcloth and a pair of pliers, around 2 cm above the split and twisted.

In the end the top part came off, leaving the steel bolt in the actual screw hole - used pliers directly on that 9by then it was too late as the ariel was in two anyway) and once that was out i simply screwed in the new pug part.

Be fine ever since - amazing how something so basic makes the car look so much smarter...

yup, mine seized too. the bolt ended up shearing off with half stuck in the base.

ended up having to buy a new base for it which is about a tenner.

You'll find my joy and the p/no for the base if you need it here:

got it off... and no damage either :D
all it took was a smart thinking girlfriend, some tin foil, masking tape and nail polish remover.

turns out the last owner had indeed stuck the aerial in place, so a dousing in acetone broke the bond enough for the dishcloth-molegrip combo to "crack" the glue and thus allow for unscrewing by hand :D

bought her a dairymilk to say thanks ;)

That in addition to watching Cannonball Run and provisional booking for the next meet... top girlfriend SK93!

Ironic given the mods you've done that this one's caused you most trouble.
