STRUT BRACE ?

Has anyone fitted one ? does it make much difference i have conti sport 2,s fitted running at the pressures on the fuel lid and the front end feels vague going into or out of roundabouts with beans maybe im too used to a quattro and need to learn the feel but if anyone can say yeah or nay that would be good.Also is the oem the way to go or get one from an indie ?

I fitted a Strong Strut (link below) which came from a group buy on the old Z4um. Certainly stiffens up the front end and feels more precise in cornering (running Pirelli P Zeros). The Strong Strut is excellent quality and includes improved firewall bracing which the OEM doesnt have. A good mod as far as I'm concerned. Hope this helps

ive got one of my MR and it does make a big difference in how the car handles At the limit, on track is where you really see the differences. On top of that it looks pretty cool under the bonnet! make sure your torque to the manufacturers specs as my mate have 2 of the nuts crack due to over tightening. 35nm is what is recommended by bmw.

Is the BMW one easy to fit?

My car feels 'loose like' at the front on entry to tight low speed corners, not understeery as such but would prefer if it was a bit more direct, is the strut likely to fix this problem.

If so think I may put one on my Christmas list :)

The front end of my car feels tighter with the brace on, more direct, not sure if it will cure the feeling you have, it's hard to describe really

The brace is easy to fit, takes about 30 mins when you've figured out which way it faces :D

thanks toplad but im near london and although i dont need an excuse to :driving: the new beasty i think thats taking it a bit far :oops: ive ordered one from bmw the guy has recommended they fit it in case the wheel moves ? says he is worried about me wiping/scrubbing my front tyres ! but as im an aircraft engineer i think two rings of bolts re torqued to 35Nm shouldnt be beyond me ! if it is then i will post telling all to travel by boat :rofl:

The wheel can't move anyway as the strut top has a dowel to keep it just where it should be.
 
Thanks for that cj10 there was no way i was giving BMW a £100 to fit it ! have u got one fitted is there a gasket or sealant at all ?
 
no nothing like that, remove blots. Fit brace over studs and reinstall blots. Wheels cant go any where due to locating pin on top of strut tower. You'll probably do it in10 mins with your back round. :thumbsup:
 
OK fitted it in my dinner break just one concern i torqued the bolts to 310lbin--35Nm and the bolts have not come through to safety ( this means at least one thread showing through the nut which is standard aeronautical practice ) done all the good things seating it with a rubber mallet after torqueing then re torqueing and still no safety ! im tempted to over tighten but am wary of cracking/splitting the nut as someone else said they had done this , so gents if anyone has a spare 2 mins can you peer under your bonnet and check if your bolts are protuding by (how many threads if any ) many thanks !

Great excuse to leave my desk...lol

Alutec brace and the nuts are bang on flush so no 'safety' as you call it. Been that way for a year and no problems, so I'll still sleep tonight.

They should be longer though as you note :thumbsdown:
 
the blots ? you mean bolts toplad ? no bolts the brace had bolts in it and the nuts were shouldered to "guide " fitment of the collars
