Strut Brace makes car uninsurable

I have mostly used Privilege in the last few years, ( proved excelant in handling claim ) for E46 and E92 m3, RS4 among others. Asked for a quote for possible Z4MC purchase and they quoted a very reasonable £233 ( I am an old git living in rural Scotland) and were happy to include CSLs for no extra charge but would not insure the car if added a strut brace. Hardly a radical mod !!

have you been given any reason for that?
something like:
most of the cars equipped with a strut brace are involved in road accident far more often that cars without...

Hmm. Probably assuming that someone who has a strut brace is more likely to be driving in a "spirited" fashion... :driving:

If its the OEM one, try Direct Line. They're not fussed about OEM mods.

Hardly 'uninsurable' though is it. It's just that your insurer chooses not to insure your car with that mod. There will be plenty who will.

I intend to write and query the decision but the initial telephone comment (from a very helpful lady) was that it was on their list of modifications for which they would refuse cover.

I have used Admiral in the past (they were superb value in the early years of E46 M3) but was not impressed in recent years. Good value year one then huge jump in premium, I really cant be bothered chopping and changing .

Adamski, are you sure about direct line & mods. I am obviously talking about a post purchase OEM item not a factory option ticked at the time of original purhase (which the strut brace never was), insurance companies appear to distinguish between the two and one needs to be careful how things are declared.

Anybody here declared a strut brace with no problem.

Thats madness, there's putting stuff onto insurance then there's taking the pee. My old car had 4 pages of modifications and it only raised the price by £100. The mods on the Z4M have put it up by £10. Stuff like bulbs and other minor things i don't bother with as (and i quote from my insurance company) we couldn't care less. lol

We discussed a while back about having a thread that covers insurance companies who are more lenient about small mods etc. Might be worth putting one together. Only problem would be if they change their policy etc... However, if everyone is declaring everything it would be easy to maintain?

Uninsurable though ? They're having a laugh. Try admiral

They wouldn't insure my car if i fitted an OEM brace

Really ? I thought I saw on here they were quite good... I use a Direct Line, but was considering changing.

There was no probs when i told them about ditching the R/flats but for some reason they weren't happy about the brace even though i told them that it was BMW part. :?

Has anyone fitted it and not had issues with insurance?

me.... my insurance didn't care one bit, they kinda chocked when i got to the other mods but we got their.

one thing of note, i think some insurers don't like this mod as in the event of an accident it transfers damage to the other side, my old mx5 turbo was in a smash, and the damage to the perfect side was pretty extensive, the bar had transferred the load and basically buckled the other side which would have been otherwise fine, this spilt the suspension tower and the car was written off.

Aren't you on fleet insurance though? Or have you moved to single car policy?

its now on a specialist car policy as my fleet guys said it was well out of their remit, they gave me 5 months to find another insurer....

the car was in the end insured with reis competition car specialists.

just done mine with Adrian Flux and declared an OEM strut brace, it ruled out a few options but didnt make a lot of difference to the cost
