Strut brace and negative camber

I would like to fit a front strut brace to my E86. Presently the front strut pins have been pulled and there’s extra negative camber. Would that affect the way the brace lines up with the studs? Is it necessary to fettle the strut mounting holes?

How much negative camber do you have up front? I have -1.2 degree's on my fronts and I just fitted my strut brace today. It was a bit of a pig to line up, but got there in the end.

Which strut brace? OEM one is an easy fit at max -ve. No need to modify anything, just follow the installation instructions.

For other makes you need to make sure that the minimum span of the brace is low enough. I would be surprised if you found one that didn't fit though, given it's a performance mod.

Slight thread hijack - how much difference do strut braces make on the z4? I remember when fitted to previous couple of cars, it did firm things up nicely. Does it have a noticeable affect on the e86? Conscious the chassis is v stiff anyway

It makes a noticeable different on my roadster. It always felt boat like on tight bends (country lanes). It now feels sharp and more direct, with less bodyroll.

I re-fitted mine yesterday after having new suspension fitted and it definitely improves the handling. I'm unsure what exact model of brace mine is, but it had a cosmo racing sticker on when I purchased it 2nd hand.

Definitely worth it on an e86 too.

I ran the Weichers brace with the pins fully pushed in no problem. Get the aluminium one that says it's for the 3.2M because it bends around rather than over the oil filler cap.

Hi Steve.
I remembered that you’d recommended the Wiechers one.
After taking ‘your’ car to the Nürburgring, it looks like I might be joining the arms race.
I also remember you suggested wheel spacers and did you mention superchargers in the past as well😁

I have the wiechers one on also. I went for the racing line aluminium one. I’d reccomend it and it fits perfectly with no pins and the struts pushed all the way in. :driving:

Superb shot!

I'm so pleased you managed to do something I never got round to.

You know you want to with regards the supercharger (and spacers plus strut brace).

How did it perform at the 'ring?

Thanks again. I've ordered the Wiechers alloy one.

Steve, I think I was one of the slowest people on the track, but the car was faultless. I appreciated the steering which was fast but neutral. It understeered a couple of times through the second part of Brunchen which I could kill with more throttle, and in fact it would generally go just where I pointed it.
My two main difficulties were that I'm used to the track on a bike where the lines and views are very different. That and the fact that I've never seen so many Porsche GT3's with slicks.
I can thouroghly recommend the DN (Destination Nurburg) trackday setup. Not like a TF day at all. Lots of backup, not many offs and when you consider that I did twenty-odd laps, good value for money.

Thanks for the DN tip, I've been wary of going to TF days with an expensive car and no insurance protection. The May price is a lot cheaper than the next two days in Aug/Sep, so that seems to be the one to go for.

Brunchen is a classic for understeer, I think it's slightly off camber isn't it?

Post up when you've tried the strut brace, I hope you'll notice the difference as I certainly did.

The 10mm spacers I ran gave more overall corner grip given the wider track but don't go any wider as it was just not rubbing on the front.
