Struggling wiht the ride and Throttle

I simply love my Z4M but it's starting to wind me up. I posted a while back on here when I 1st got the car how I thought the ride was bad, well i'm now seriously considering swapping her in for a new shape M3 or an RS4, I just can't get on with the ride, I live on a really bumpy hill and by the time I get up it or down it i've nearly hit the roof 4 or 5x, really really starting to frustrate me. I also find it really hard on fast B roads to stay smooth and progressive on the throttle and end up kangarooing. Does anyone know exactly what rating the springs are, I really do think a softer set up would really make it a far better car to live with and indeed a faster A to B car.

The other problem is throttle response, kangarooing when cold is the way it is but I'm finding this all the time, especially on bumpy roads, it seems when you come off the throttle slightly and then reapply it goes mad. I seem to remember there was a procedure on the M3 to reset the throttle, think it's something to do with the ECU adjusting to driving style, i'm asuuming the Z4M also has this, anyone know what it is?

A remap might be the option but thought i'd check 1st, also is this something the CDV mod will help?

Here's what you're looking for for the throttle reset:

As for the spring rating i'm not sure... sounds like a question for GVfB

Great cheers, i'll give it a crack, if anyone can answer the spring qu., i've heard that the Alpina car suspension is much better, i really don't understand why they have made it so uncompromsing IMO it makes it slower A to B than it should be, hard does not = fast

Removing the CDV will only help with clutch control and changing gear, but it does make a lot of difference. With the CDV removed or modified the biting point for the clutch is much more positive and consistent. With the CDV fitted I used to change from 1st to 3rd, or pull away in 2nd gear to avoid the 1st to 2nd shift but once it's modified it's no longer an issue.

I can't help with the spring rates but what about having a drive in the roadster? I had a test drive of the roadster before my dealer got a coupe as a demo and the difference surprised me, the roadster felt quite a bit softer to me. You could get a drive of the roadster and if it's a lot better get a set of springs/shocks for one fitted to your car.

Odd. I don't have these problems at all. I guess on a really bumpy road at high speeds it does get a bit choppy but overall it's much more compliant that my M3. May be worth trying another coupe/roadster to compare. Taffy, replied to your email.

Haven't got any mail as yet, how much are the CDV's new? I'm suprised you mention that about the ride, everyone I have spoken to has commented that the ride is far too harsh, I understand that it needs to be firm but I can't help but feel that the srpring rates are wrong for UK use, a touch softer would make much easier and swifter progress and possibly reduce the interfernce from the TC

PM sent. Not sure why the ride on mine seems ok or why it shifts ok (no bunny hops so far), it just does. OK, it's not a Citroen but it's a lot better than the M3 I had (maybe something was up with it but I doubt it).

There was always a lot of debate on Z4 ride quality on the old Z4UM site. I really suspect that it is a matter of personal preference and/or tolerance. Some really hated it, some really loved it.

I too live in a very hilly and rural area with some marginal roads, but I do not find the ride at all objectionable (not a Z4M, but an si with sport suspension and RFTs – which many say is even worse). I really enjoy the amount of road feedback that the suspension brings back to you and do not find the ride at all harsh or jaring.

CDV mod may help with some of the throttle issues, but more on clutch engagement...

I found the H&R springs actually calmed the ride down a fair bit, compared to standard. And gave the added bonus of the reduced ride height which improves the stance/look of the car.

I have to say that the ride on the M3 was much more compliant than the Z4MC, I was actually beginning to find it a bit soft before I sold it on. Have you changed your tyres Taffy or are you still on the Contis? I've gone for PS2's on the 19" CSL wheels and have noticed an improvement in the ride quality with the standard M3 255/35, 225/40 tyre sizes.

Hi Sixspeed,

How much are those springs and where do I get them?

Cheers

I got mine here, took about 3 days to arrive.

Definately made a huge difference to the road manners of the car. I also found the ride far too choppy as standard, and this settled it down no end. It's still firm, but you don't bounce around half as much!

Quit your complaining :D

I love to take my well endowed female friends for a quick ride :fuelfire: just for this reason. :poke:

peripheral vision my friend.... Practice makes perfect :brucelee:

No still on standard Conti's, I know everyone slags them off and although I don't think they are a great tyre, do provide decent grip in the dry, will change for something better and might go for CSL wheels as well. I'm suprised to hear that about the H&R springs, I have access to them so might get a set for trial purposes
