Stripping Wheels

I am in the process of refurbing some 108s. They were corroded on the inners and quite badly kerbed so I thought I better get them back to bare metal. In my shed I found a tin of paint stripper from Focus (remember them?) which must have sat there for 10 years. Reading the label it said it contained dichloromethane (also known as methylene chloride) and methanol, remembering Nitromors had the same chemicals I started stripping the wheels with it.
All was going reasonably well until I ran out of the Focus paint stripper and discovered that dichloromethane was now banned for home use from 2011. :headbang: I remembered then that Machine Monkey said that Nitromors wouldn't touch his wheels when he was refurbing his. Also, have you seen the price of Nitromors? £9.50 for 375ml :o
After a bit of research I came across someone who'd used B&Q's own stripper. It contains Benzyl Alcohol and is just under £3 for 500ml. You have to follow the instructions by leaving it for an hour and then applying a second coat but it does soften the lacquer and paint enough to be able to remove with a wire brush in an electric drill. Also, it doesn't burn your skin like the old Nitromors. For some reason it's slightly cheaper to buy 2X 500ml rather than 1ltr :?

Nitromorse definitely dose not do what it says on the tin!! I used some stuff called blackfriers couple of coats without letting it dry out then Peale it off with a little scraper

Pain in the arse referring your own wheels!!!

There are plenty of warnings on here about not doing your own but we still do it anyway. :)

True it is hard work but good fun as well. If there are no time restraints and they are a second set. I can see see how it could be relaxing.

Hi..
Have you actually split the two piece rims down, before you started work with the chemicals, to strip the paint and lacquer off, etc?
Cheers..

I put the focus stripper on before I split them because somebody had painted over the bolts. When the paint was partially off and the the bolt paint softened, then I split them.

Dont bother messing around doing them yourself, I got City Powder coating in Brum to do mine. At £35 per wheel inc taking the tyre off and putting it back on. I had to split the wheels but at £140 for a full strip and powder coat that has to be a bargain.

Indeed, good price and nice job by the looks.
I have enjoyed doing mine even though there was a lot work involved as the wheels were bad to start with.

I tried nitromors on my 108's... Pointless... I got a prepping wheel from screw fix which attached to my drill...

Stripped my wheels in no time :)

Very dusty work though.
