Streaky windows?

NOT really a problem per say, but more of a curiosity...

My (door) windows seem rather prone to residue-like swathes of streak lines on the inside. The driver's especially, though it is admittedly used more often (tolls, pass cards, etc.). I was just wondering what the culprit might be. Is it grease or something from the mechanicals inside the door? :?

It's not deeply bothersome, just mildly annoying and I simply wash them regularly.

Cheers.

rollingstone, streaky windows is typical roadster/cabriolet problem. Nothing you can do about it but clean more often. Unlike some who believe one product does it all, I don't believe that for a minute. I start out with a vigorous Windex cleaning using paper towels (only use them for a moderate period of time as they break down and leave piles of lint) and performing this clean several times, don't miss one square inch of glass. Next I use a milder cleaner like Stoner Invisible Glass using a Glass Microfiber Towel. Most car stores and WalMart sell these. I also use this: Griot's Window Cleaner for the car, especially the rear window.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I thought it was just me because I don't clean the car enough.

Why? Muck from the soft top? :scratchhead:

You can cure that if you leave the top and windows down all the time!

I'll remember that next time I buy a roadster. Doh!

I do recall this from my days in the Z3 and TTr... But I'm my current "coupedom," I'll go ahead an try a few better cleaners, like the Stoner Invisible Glass.

Cheers.

IMHO

What causes the streaks is the felt in the door below the rubber piece that the glass passes through gets dirty. What I do is take a pop sicle stick and micro fiber towel and some vinegar and water 1-3 mix and with the window down ( usually after washing the car ) I run the towel with the cleaning solution between the two rubber wipers for the window and the stick ( do not allow the stick to become bare on the rubber ) and slide it back and forth a few times useing a clean area of the towel to wipe and dry the area after the cleaning. The rubber wipers has a piece of felt that gets dirty from road grime and the like. When the window goes down the felt on the outside transfers the dirt to the inside piece of felt and you then get the streaks on both sides.

I do this about every other time I wash the car. I don't have much rain out here so if you have more rain ( thus more road grime ) you may need to do more often.

I use the water and vinegar as it is not harsh on the rubber. I would not use windex or that type of cleaner as the rubber will not like it. A thin stick with the towel doubled over works well.

It does not taks much to do this. No forcing the stick and towel. You may need to do this several times to get the felt clean.

I guess i could have said be careful and I accept no responsibility for splinters. :poke:
