Strangers mislead by Z values ?

Always nice when someone goes overboard on your chosen chariot :) This was almost surreal
Sunday i had the most pleasant well mannered chinese guy in his early twenties at the house to view my transit for sale .
He wanted the van, left deposit & when leaving mentioned the Z at side of house . " BMW's are fantastic cars that maybe one day i will own "
Fast forward to tonight & before taking the van asked if he could sit in the car ( now in garage ) so i let him & showed him the wheel gear change & nav etc .
He was semi hysterical & i had to ask him how much he thought the car was worth  " OoOOO at weast firty fousand " :P
not laughing at the guy cause he was a top bloke but he nearly sh4t himself when i said under £10k & one of those inferior roofless examples can be half again !

Okay, ignoring the quite frankly gutter-dwelling final comment, to be fair they were almost (and sometimes more than that) new, so he's not far off emotionally. I love that about my car - it still looks the nuts, even 7 years on and I am enjoying myself for much less money than the average joe actually realises. That can have a negative effect of course, in that people think you are overburdened with folding and act accordingly. Chap working in a service station once told me he wanted to save an buy one 'one day' - when I told him how little he could need to fulfil his dream he was delighted. It actually felt really good because he was obviously a car nut and I'd made his day :D

Before I got my used Z4 I too thought they were beyond my reach - couldn't believe how cheaply they can be picked up even from BM dealers - compared to Boxsters S2000s etc.

Are they overpriced new (list price) or just don't hold their value well?

Are they really that well priced though compared to Boxsters james??

Ive been looking recently and its scary how cheap you can buy early ones for.....

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-986-96-04/porsche-boxster-s-2001/965960

........And i bet people will still think it cost 15k.

All perception.

I don't think i,m showing Z bias by saying the boxster in all its 3 stages has not aged as well as a Z ?
I could have bought one numerous times but just can't find anything about the looks that i like  but then i,m not a convertible lover so that may not help.

Out of interest, what was the price of a brand new Coupe?

Despite the fact that Coupe owners think they are more exclusive, better, etc, and cost more..as some mags have sometimes printed(eg. m cars feature in bmw car stated the coupe cost more)...it is,as we all on here KNOW,
THE COUPES COST LESS NEW...due to their lesser desirability, and BMW had to make them cheaper than the Roadsters in order to sell them all,lol :poke:
(just joking of course,folks)

I quite agree,Bing,as when i got my 1st z4 it was a 20month old 3.0i se(m-sport),and with all its options was over 38k new/1st owner had paid 36k...and one or 2 of my nbrs as well as my window cleaner, couldnt believe it had cost me just 21k(book value at the time was 23.5-24.5k),thinking i wouldnt have got any change out of 30/35k for it,given it was relatively new at the time, and looked more expensive than it was...so just goes to show BMW got it pretty bang on,styling and looks wise, etc.
And as u say, even when it was 7yrs old it still got many an admiring glance, and plenty of nice comments;with ppl stilll thinking it was worth/would cost circa 15k(when indeed it was just half that in reality at that point)...guess thats one of the things that make these cars so damn good to own :D :driving:

I only realised the great value when my boss mentioned he had seen a 2.5 E85 for 'about 6k' that got me looking and, well.... here we are! I was looking around at 03 golf GTI's etc and always thought Z's were 15K+

Possibly the only good bit of advise I have ever had from the boss! haha

I think the reason the E85/6 still look good is because the design was well ahead of its time in the looks department at launch. I remember the design getting really bad reviews or really good review but no middle of the road opinions but I liked it as it was the least girly 2 seater of the S2000, Boxster, RX8 and the TT. Added to the fact I already had a bmw and was happy with it it was a no brainer. I will say though the build quality is not on par with the E36. Years on other manufacturers have caught up with that futuristic look back then it will likely start looking old in another 5 years. It seems everything gets bigger so I don't think its the lines that will end up looking dated it will just be the size of the car compared to the next Z4 they release. I prefer the lines od the E85 compared to E89 but like the beefy look of the E89 due to its size.

Couldnt agree more. The ahead of its time design plays a huge part in perceived value as it still looks modern (crucially exterior AND interior).

I agree with the confused feelings about the e89 too - it is a lovely looking car and I do really like it, but the lines just don't quite flow as well, but it is more modern looking, but it has a weird ass, but I love the sharpened front end, and the interior is better looking and specc'd, but the seats look like they have a hunchback, but they are much more comfy...

i remember being in year 8 (not long ago) and the headmaster of our school had a 3.0 z4
and everyone was like "wow mr mulraney must have good pay being a headmaster of a secondary school...hes got a z4"

little did i know that not much later i'd be driving around in the same albeit faster car :driving: :driving:

I too like so many others thought "just is outta my reach...one day" thanks to so many online places like auto traded, i found mine on yahoo autos. I remember when I picked up my 03 (dropped off really, dealer bought it from was outta state and shipped free taking my trade back with them). I worked retail management at the time and the store managers comment was "gee I guess we're paying you too much". This was right about the same time his wife (making more than him) got a new 2012 camero. He was so jealous of my 03. When leaving them for a better job he was so shocked since I'd been with them for 14 years asking me what they could do better and so forth. I mentioned pay and broke down told him how little I really paid for my car not to mention my insurance is half what his is. He was stark white by the end of our conversation. It really amazed everyone I know when I tell them how affordable they really are when looking at used rather than new. And with how good shape most are that you find they don't look 9 years old.

I look at mine on 56 & find it hard to believe its 7 years old ? the style in & out plus the drive just doesn't give any indication of age
my wifes golf is the same year & whilst its built like a tank it does show the signs of aged styling .
JMO but the Z4 85/86 should live a good while yet before it looks or feels dated  happy days for us folks :)

I am confident that it is going to look good long enough for me to be happy about buying an ///M in a couple of years
