Strange Number Plate

It might be as it's Monday morning and my brain isn't up to full function yet but there's currently a rather ratty looking Clio outside my office with the number plate

G 1 G 1 9 (Spaced G 1 G 1 9)

The G's are not standard UK font and they're not 6's either. Is this even a valid format for a private plate?
 
Is the first 1 a trimmed down L ?

Sometimes people do crazy and illegal things with number plates to try and make something appear something that it isn't.

If ever you want to while away several minutes there's a good thread on the Pistonheads forum about number plates and what people do with them :scratchhead:
