Had my Z now for a few months and got through most of my list for this year’s stuff to sort out and for the most part all is well, but I have a really strange noise from the rear of the car best described as akin to the noise you would hear if you had a Stiff card brushing against the spokes of a wheel of a push bike. I am buggered if I can fathom it out, its speed related equally left and right rear it cannot be heard on an open road but as soon as you’re in town with road noise reverberating from parked cars or walls is really prominent. The cars just been MOT’d and has passes with flying colours but I am really puzzled. Any ideas?

I mean stones are trapped between the tread of the tyres. New tyres have a deeper tread and stones can get picked up in these and when the tyre rolls the stones can cause noise. This would be speed dependant too.

:D thought that at first had the car on a ramp and looked at the tyres but both sides are clean, also no lateral play in the wheel bearings ether side

As part of this years work replaced all Diff bushes rear/ARB bushes and rear suspension bushes at the time props and diff seemed to have no play

What about the rear brake pads. A small stone could of got trapped and is causing the problem

Not z4 but is bmw related

Thank's will have a look sounds like it could be on the right track was not going to spend on that part of the Drive train till next year best hope for some on-call over time :-)

Thanks for the advice:
I started looking into this but unfortunately I had a front shock failure:
The front left shock was totally buggered (it never rains) I spent a few hours here looking at options and decided to replace all the shocks and springs with a Bilstein B12 kit.
Have a look on Ebay Germany it’s way cheaper than the UK
I bought a complete kit from Germany with Eibach pro-kit springs for £430.00 and fitted it a few weeks ago.
** allow another £50 or so for the OEM top shock mount plates and rubber mounts not compulsory but good to change whilst you have the option.
I still have the noise which is a bugger it does not detract from the fact the car is incredible to drive just means a Differential and drive shafts refurbishment is bumped up the list for later/next year.
