Strange Noise.....

When I start the car I get the usual slight whine while the DVD drive reads the disk for the navigation. When this stops I can hear a lower pitched, quieter motor type hum that seems to come from the rear of the car. Try as I might I can't identify the source. I know it''s a shot in the dark but does anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like audio interference of some sort? Get someone to play around/rev up etc while you go round all the speakers with your ear? or get someone to do what it is you are doing and take a walk around the car go into the boot? Sounds daft but you never know. I once had an annoying clicking sound at the top of the windscreen (toyota), so I got my wife to listen and have a look around while I drove, turned out to be at the bottom cos the sound was traveling up the glass, total illusion lol. the glue holding the window down was tacky clicking. I would have never have discovered it any other way.

That would make sense as it is definitely coming from the rear of the car around the exhaust area - should I worry? :?

If its a hum, no to worry, its normal. If it makes grinding, crunching, whining or whistling noises, have it looked at. (possibly this is a case of iworrytoomuchitis)

I noticed a whine yesterday after a spirited drive. Comes from the middle of the car and can be heard from outside on either side.

It's not present when ignition is in position 1 only when I start the car and its idling in Any gear position (auto)

Once going I can't hear it, possibly drowned out.

Car drives fine.

Any ideas?

Be wort adding although constant, the whine cuts in and out

I'm having exactly the same thing. Trying to ignore it at the moment to be honest having had other stuff to do recently. It either makes the house or doesn't ...nothing in between. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
