Hello,

I really enjoy my car :driving: , there is just one little problem that driving me crazy

I hear strange noise from the passenger and driver sides of the car. It is quite difficult to describe what type of noise it is so I've uploaded a video, follow the link bellow
http://youtu.be/CCEhkpLENsE

Is this noise something that I have to worry about or it is just expansion of the metal?

Had you been driving it hard? Sounds like very hot metal! My brakes/wheels make that noise after I've thrashed it.

@spearman - I had been driving it for five minutes, not hard

@tino - I'm going to see if that will address the problem

I presume the engine is switched off (sorry on the iPhone)?

Where's the noise coming from?

Something's not right IMO. It definitely sounds like a heat related noise. Have you looked underneath the car and under the bonnet? Try moving your hand close to feel for heat.

Sounds normal to me. My car ticks and cracks from the heat as it's cooling down. It's probably a heat-shield or other metal component crackling as it's contracting back to its "cold" shape.

Yea I've gotten this in most all my cars - and motorcycles. My Xterra does it the most but not quite as much as yours. Definitely heat related popping - I'd vote "nothing to worry about".

My house does the same thing at night when it cools down. Not nearly as much obviously but you can hear the wood settling about.

I would say this is normal if you'd been driving it hard. But if you've only been driving it for 5mins, I think there's a heat problem. Something's getting too hot IMO.

Is it possible that there is heat shielding missing, so some of the car's main structure is getting too hot ? There should be silver dimpled heat sheilding all the way down the exhaust underneath...

I would be inclined to disagree. SINCE it's only been 5 minutes the only thing that should have time to heat up (that's under the car where he is hearing it from) is the exhaust. I don't think that radiant heat would have time to heat up any of the surrounding structure so my bet would be that it's s component of the exhaust pipes themselves. Perhaps the cats as they take some time to heat up properly.

This is after the 20 minute drive home from work but it's the same kind of thing - but the exhaust probably gets as hot as it will ever get after just a few minutes.
