hi guys lately i have been having a problem with my cd player. when i unlock the car it starts making a loud noise like there's a cd skipping inside it and there's not even a cd inside it. it only stops doing it when i switch ignition on. when i first bought the car it used to make the same noise when i switched it off but it would stop after about 10 seconds. any help knowing whats causing this will be appreciated cheers.

I had a similar issue with the dvd unit for the sat nat.

Does it start once you open the car, and is the noise accompanied by a clicking?

If so then it's possibly the laser pick up drive. On mine (2004) the plastic drive that engages on the lead screw was worn. This meant that the head was never pulled back into the "home" position. So when u open up the car the drive fires up ( prep for location) and that's was the noise.

seem to remember similar in mine, dealer replaced the head unit, luckily for me just before the end of the AUC warranty...

Yep...I also had this in my CSL...also had the head-unit replaced under warranty by BMW.

Cheers guys think I will just buy a new one then. Does anybody know if the aftermarket stereos with the surround fitting kit found on ebay are a good fit? Or should I just find a bmw one?

Personally, I don't like the aftermarket ones in a surround. You'll get a better spec stereo for sure but for me these don't just sit right in the Z4.

Search on Ebay for a BMW one...........IIRC if you get the "Business" one it will even play mp3's from CD. I'm sure someone will confirm this.

Yup, same as mine.
Don't bother with a new one leave it in there and buy a grom MP3 usb bluetooth..fit it behind the head unit and while you are at it disconnect the wire to the laser in the head that will stop the noise!!
Put it all back together and you've got a fabulous new all singing and dancing kit that uses your head display for tags and notifications and your speakers and a strategically positioned mic for your hands free phone. Get ya self all your toons on your phone set it to bt on entry to car.
Et voila!! As my gorgeous French girlfriend keeps telling me :D pity she can't cook..oh well Can't have everything!!
