Strange knocking noise at startup

Hi All,

I've recently noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine at startup. With the bonnet up it is pretty loud. The knocking noise disappears after a couple of minutes and the engine noise in general gets quiter. The car is running fine as far as I can tell.

Now my secondary air pump isn't working at the moment so while investigating that I noticed this knocking noise coming it seems from inside the middle of the engine.

Car has done 43,000 miles and is due its inspection 2 in 6,000 miles or so.

Any ideas?

Hi Taz,

Its the S54 Engine I believe? Z4M Roadster 2006. I would say its more of a fast knocking. Strange how it goes away within a couple of minutes so not sure what is running for that couple of minutes at startup

sorry i can't help then, but glad its not the N52 engine otherwise it could have been the HVA's fault
