Stoptech Big Brake Kit

Lol, you lot would laugh if I told you how much I've spent on my 200SX...

Of the budget kits that are available I'd personally look at K Sport (with upgraded pads). I know a lot of very quick track cars using them and the UK distributor has a very good reputation.

Nobody's saying that Jonny...

IMO, and this is not a 'dig' or intended to 'get your back up', I think you've run out of reasonably priced and reasonably tasteful mods for your car but, with all due respect, you've become slightly obsessive about modding it and are looking at more and more expensive, and possibly extreme, changes to keep up your modding 'fix' - all without any regard for how sensible the spend is or if you're adding any 'value' to your car.

At the end of the day it's your money and you're entitled to spend it wherever and however you wish - I just hope that you don't wake up one morning with the sudden realisation that you've got a car that's over a decade old and worth under £5k but have spent the equivalent of a new caymen/boxter/E89 35is/(insert car here) on modifications

It's part of being young and care free Perry. When I was Jonny's age, I spent nearly £8k adding all sorts of nonsense to a 1.4 Corsa SRi. However, at the time, it was a passion and what I lived for. It hasn't stopped me going on to have a lovely partner, house, cars and regular holidays in my middle age and it won't stop Jonny either. No amount of rationalisation from an older head will work on a young bloke having lots of expensive fun while he has few responsibilities.

Did you ever spend over half the value of your Corsa on a single mod? (that's assuming it was worth more than £500 to start with  )

Towards the end, it was getting close.

Met my best mate through that scene and would do it all again if I could go back in time. :D

Another option vs the BMW Performance kit would this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/porsche-911-996-boxster-Big-Red-front-brake-calipers-mod-for-golf-M3-Audi-/151457785334?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item23439665f6

The front callipers off the early Boxster S or 996 911 fit the Z4M's discs perfectly with the proper calliper carriers. It's a popular option for M3's. Just refurbish them with some nice paint to remove the Porsche insignia and it's sorted.

A thread that has a lot of useful information from the more knowledgeable members  and a load of fucking s**t from idiots who think they know everything but really know sweet f**k all

Over the last year or so this forum has really changed, i know other people think the same as i keep reading it on other posts. Some people are so defensive and need to chill out.

If you don't know what your talking about don't post a comments that sounds like you do, some members will read it and take it as factual information. instead as a question, state your understanding and ask if this is factual.

luckily there are some knowledgeable folks on here to correct most of the rubbish that people post.

Going back to the topic a little.... :D

I am really liking the idea of the BMWP parts as a decent upgrade. Do they work well and does anyone have a parts list please??

Easy upgrade for an M??? :P

Work very well.

You'll need
BMW Performance Calipers 34116786741 & 34116786742
e39 brake pad sensor 34352229018
Pads, up to you but for track work I would highly recommend the Pagid RS-29 @ around £250 iirc, OEM pads are about £100 I think
Custom brackets, bolts and goodridge hoses from a user called 'Dino' on M3cutters £230 - as far as I am aware he is the only source for these as he makes them himself.

Bolt straight on, you may need spacers, haven't checked with standard M rims, CSLs will not require spacing

Nice. any chance of more pics?! Not keen on the caliper colour but, to my eye, they look great. Nice one.

These do look very good...

Now, I saw some nice rear calipers in earlier pics as well - Porsche Boxster S? Would that be right??

Any further details on those are much appreciated...!

I run the same set/calipers (on a non M) only I use the 2 pot bmw performance calipers at the rear.
The front was a bolt on kit from ecs tuning (for a z4 3.0i/e46 330i), and the rears I made myself (so the 135i/M3 2 pot performance caliper, a modified X3 disc, some bits&bolts from E60, E87 and E46 and some of my own  )
All that to get a bigger&thicker rear disc and get it working with the parking brake.
I might change that for a rear z4m disc. They are lighter and rear discs are not that heavily used.
I'm not a real track junkie, more a spirited driver in mountains etc, so a lighter setup (lighter discs) make more sense than very large and thick discs. In the end it's all unsprung and rotating mass, so it all comes to a (performance) cost one way or another.

So front:
15frontbbk.jpg

rear
16rearbbk.jpg

It cost me in total (so front & rear incl new discs, pads, parkbrake pads, SS lines etc) about 1400gbp I think...
ECS had the rear calipers on sale back then for 60gbp or so...so I thought... yes I'd like a pair of those too
Rear setup wasn't easy to make, but that is wat I like, some nice tinkering :D

But what's all this talk about drilled discs cracking? Sure it can happen, but the z4m and m3 have standard drilled discs (cast in the disc and machined), and do not have a notorious track record or cracked/exploding discs....
It's all about the quality of the product itself. BMW has it's own brake disc manufacturing plant (one of the few brands who has that) and they make a fine product.
I've seen normal discs crack as well.

I have to agree with some though that £3k is a LOT to pay just for looks!
+1 especially when the car is only worth about £4500 - madness really.....

Dude that's a bit harsh , if the chap wants to spend the dollar let it be.... Simon's suggestion sounds a good one with a M brake set up as a soloution

Becoming.. #brakegate

Somethings cost thousands to create and build and are pointless, but means a lot to them. If it puts a smile on their face and makes them proud of their achievement, then its all worth it.
Many have followed Jonnnny's modding journey here on the forum and it been fun to watch. Being honest, this place wouldn't be the same without him.

And it's a hobby. A way to spend your time and spend your money. Investing in a car is always a bad investment, whether you buy it or tune it. So be it. A good&safe investment is putting it in a bank account or something. What fun is that
Just dont buy this stuff with your last money :)

Exactly, what CSL kit is this? Our standard OEM brakes are exactly the same as CSL brakes :?

Impressive, that's not simple work to get those calipers to work as I understand it

Indeed 996/BoxsterS calipers. I paid about £225 for them 2nd hand, had them refurbed, painted, RS-29 pads and HEL brakelines. Custom bracket fitted them onto standard rear discs.

The bias seems pretty ok on track with the 6pot bmwp, fronts will lock first

Another option is running Porsche callipers all round :)

Ohhh nice.... And how much is the porsche caliper set up all round?
Think it's about £1300 in parts all round, my callipers were refurbished by the seller so didn't need to factor that into the costs.

Then you've got the labour to fit, but that'll apply to any calliper if not doing it yourself.

Neil.
