Stone in brakes

Just leaving for work this morning and about a mile in heard a squeal.

Gradually louder and louder. About a mile further is my local bmw dealership. By this time the noise is like someone dragging fingernails down a chalkboard but 1000 x louder.

Sitting here now and advised its £160/hr labour charge.

Tried reverse and forward a few times but no joy its still rattling around in there.

Reversing and braking sharply can free it. Also you can try pushing back the heat shield to see if that frees it. Last time I had this on mine I accidently hit a pot hole which bounced out the stone. Otherwise it's potentially wheel off time.
 
I've had this twice. The first time the stone worked free the second time i called BMW assistance and they sent out a BMW tech guy within the hour. He told me that BMW are aware of the issue on the M sport brakes and there will be a recall soon.

If you're in the 3 years since owning call BMW assistance direct from the car, not your mobile.
 
...also the BMW tech guy showed me how to resolve myself but it requires you jacking the car up and removing the wheel, you'll easily see the stone so just use something to pick it out like a thin, long screwdriver.
 
Ah the stuck stone problem. Had it three times in a month on my old Z4. First time managed to get it to go after driving ten miles (not a pleasant experience), second time BMW assist, third time after reading various posts tried the back and forth as soon it happened and it popped out straight away.
However........... When the car went in for the service a little later I had the shields replaced under warranty so maybe there is a fix out there!

Several stones apparently.

To be fair to BMW Newbridge (outside Edinburgh) I pulled into them literally as it happened and I was passing and they took the car in right away and I had it back within an hour. Well done to them.

I guess the bonus was the mandatory ‘health check’ and getting a clean sheet on that.

I might have a look at this ‘BMW Assist’. Whats that then?
 
If you bought your car new in 2023 (as per you profile) BMW assist is free for 3 years, roadside and technical help. I can't believe you paid for it to be fixed as BMW assist would do it for free, go into the iDrive on apps and you can call BMW assist. It what i did and they came to my house within and hour and got rid of the stones.

Interesting....Lets hope there is a recall..

I actually carry a long thin screwdriver in the car just in case.

Its happened once to me [in deepest darkest wales, miles from any assistance],,,but luckily I got it out whilst driving.. :driving:

Its new to me but isn’t a new BMW, nor purchased from a bmw dealership. :cry:

As for warranty cover, if your car is less than three years old it’s covered by BMW manufacturer warranty and roadside assistance. Stone removal is covered. If the car is over 3 years old BMW extended warranty offers exactly the same cover going forward, including stone removal. I pay £440 for comprehensive cover including Euro cover.

If there is a fix under recall that’s news to me but I’m sure Jim and a few other G29 owners will be happy. However, whilst I had this happen to me a few times I’ve never needed BMW to fix as the reverse/forward technique has always worked. It seems the issue has become far less frequent on my car.

Happened again last week.

The stones came out on a quick 'reverse and hard brake' manoeuvre.

Its in for its MoT in January and I've raised it with BMW in terms of a 'known fault'. Will see how they respond.
