Stone chips!

So ive had my zed for a couple weeks now and last friday I gave it quick wash and rinse but didnt have time to dry it, so of course it ended up all streaky. I really wanted it shiny for the bh weekend so I took it to my local hand car wash that lunchtime.

They use a handheld pressure wash and I was afraid of them ruining the roof with detergents etc so I told them to leave it alone. They did the rest of the car in about 20 mins with me in it. It came up really clean, only now I've seen a few stone chips on the bonnet that I'm sure won't there before! They're only tiny dots but given that the bonnet looked flawless when I bought it I'm a little annoyed. the zed is midnight blue and the dots are white.

So, a few questions:

a) are pressure washers a bad idea? do they remove paint protection like wax and polish?
b) do you think the previous owner had done something devious? or just a nice polish? I'm not massively bothered and probably would have still bought the car with the barely noticeable stone chips but don't like feeling like I've been had
c) is there anything I can do to regain the flawless bonnet on a more permanent basis? would wax and or polish do the job or would I need to take it to a detailer for a touch up or respray? is it even worth it if stone chips are going to keep occurring?
d) is it a big deal? ie if I leave it 6 months to get it fixed (assuming it's a pricey job) will this be neglect and cause further damage?

I've never known much about washing cars as always owned boring basic cars with lots of existing scratches, but I love the zed and really want to keep it nice. Will be researching general washing and care tips on this forum and others but thought I'd ask some advice on the above first!

A nice filler wax can hide a lot of imperfections... Ie Autoglyms super resin polish...

Part of ownership i'm afraid... Jet washers are fine... Only permanent fix is a respray (but it will come back!)

+1 We all suffer from them unfortunately, but a good filler will help to mask them as aquazi said

If you get it polished + waxed, I'd stay away from the jetwash, it'll take it all off again pretty quickly I'd say. It's easy to tell - when waxed, water will bead. Pressure wash it and see if it still beads!

Welconme to the forum - Try this for touching up stone chips.

As others have already mentioned, one of the hazards of owning a low slung sports car unfortunately. :(

Some good tips and links already offered further up.

As for leaving them for a few months, shouldn't be a problem if you keep an eye on them. You could always get a touch up paint made up as an interim measure? I find if you use one of those very delicate modelling paint brushes, and build up the layers gradually, you can get quite a nice finish. Main thing being it stops the metal being exposed and prevents rust setting in.

Hope you get it sorted and welcome to the forum.

Cheers.

Outside of the stone chip advice, if you want to keep your car pristine you need to learn how to wash your car properly.

If you clean it improperly or take it to a hand car wash you will get a lot of scratches.

There's a good detailing guide here somewhere (have a search) which outlines how to clean the car properly without damaging the paintwork.

Welcome and enjoy :driving:

Thank you all for the advice. I recognise that I need to learn how to wash this car properly - as I said before I've not really bothered much in the past but really want to keep my new zed nice and pretty. I won't be taking it to another hand car wash any time soon! Those video guides look really useful so will be looking to use that as a good basis. I've only ever used buckets and sponges etc (though won't be using a sponge again!) but never a hose - looks like i'll have to invest in a longer hose as my current one doesn't stretch to the front of the house.

Regarding the existing stone chips then, is touch up the only option for a short term fix? Or would wax and/or polish help? Forgive my ignorance but having never taken proper care of a car I'm not sure what either wax or polish really does! Am i right in thinking that wax protects and polish improves the finish? Can both be done by hand or should i be looking at getting this done at a detailer (bearing in mind my inexperience!). And is it something that's worth doing?
