I meant - that if they were not told about the wheels, they would use it as a get-out to pay nothing as the insured car was not as described.

Unfortunately these things happen. Only last week somebody on my estate (Leeds) interupted burglars who the police said have been targetting high performnace BMW's. Thankfully they fled in that instance.

Can't be too careful though. I've since started keeping my keys in the bedside drawer and sleeping with a baseball bat under the bed. Not very nice at all.

Playalistic - I hadn't even thought about the spares. I'll have to give them to my bro down the road.

Especially if you have a family car/beater. Doesn't take a genius to watch you leave your house and know it's unoccupied. It's safe to assume most people have spares hidden away *somewhere* and this thing is becoming much more common. Sad situation!
 
sorry to hear your loss

perhaps i need to re think where i keep my spare keys - my car is sat outside my house 98% of the time, would not take a thief too long to find keys
 
You have my sympathies. This exact same thing happened to us last week, though it was my sisters car that was stolen (2009 Alfa MiTo 155 in black, RE58MHO if London people wouldn't mind keeping an eye out!).

It was also about 3pm on a main road right through Richmond, which is a good area. Police seem to have given up entirely on burglary (if you wear gloves, you are home free) and tell us the car 'will turn up eventually'. And they say cuts will harm the level of service they can provide!

It's the worst feeling but keep your chin up and take some (limited) comfort in the fact this is what insurance is for at the end of the day. You'll have it all back in a few weeks and they will still be thieving scum who have failed at life.

Beef up home security though - letterbox guard, new locks etc.
 
You should check to see if you can trace the perps with the PS3, i am assuming that you have an online account with the PS3. Most crims wont be clever enough to realise that by plugging it in and connecting it to broadband you or the police might be able to trace it back to an address from the perps broadband ip address. Wouldn't that be cool if if you were able to do that, even if they decided to scrub it after switching it on going online even once the connection ip address would be logged by PSN. Just thought of one more thing, even if they scrub the console the MAC address of the onboard NIC will remain the same there may be a way to trace the console, you could find out what the mac address was from sony as i expect you would have registered it with them. The great thing about modern net enabled tech is that there are a million ways to trace it, the PS3 will eventually reappear on the network not many people would own a PS3 and not go online with it?

I know what you mean about the cops giving up due to the volume of problems they have to deal with, I called them recently and they didnt even appear. I am hitting the weights instead, building up some serious strength incase i ever need to persuade someone to leave my property. I returning to some martial arts training when i return from Florida, I am going to try Muay Thai again I found it be a flowing natural fighting technique I just cant remember why I stopped going.

I hate that this happened to you; I surprised a would-be burglar trying to gain entry to my roadster 4 days after I bought it in June. This happened mid-morning on a weekday in a busy business district. Those worthless mukes are getting more bold each year.

My '07 came with a tracking device, which means BMW can track the car if it is ever stolen. I just have to 1). file a police report, and 2). call BMW to report the theft. Does your Z4 have this feature?

Hello mate - yes it is horrible, but as per Srutch, you need to do all of that stuff now and hope that you DONT see your car again and push the insurance people through a payout...Why? Well IF they find your car, damaged or not, you most likley will get it back, even after any repairs and then you'll be left with a CAT D car.
Same happened to me and yes whilst the robbery is horrid, the car going was not such a bad thing as you get paid out and then can buy another :)

I heard if you get your car back within a week and there is no damage, it is not recorded as stolen recovered and the insurance do not have to pay out.

A friend of mine had his house broken in to while he was sitting at home watching the news with his mum. The guys bust through the door, and scrambled in, my mate kick one in the face as he tripped over the door mat. The guy didn't feel a thing and jumped straight back up (must've been high on something). The guys had knives and demanded he hand over the keys for his Type R he had on his drive. Scared of what they would do and with his mum in the living room, he relented and handed the keys over. The crack-heads then used his car as a getaway vehicle in an armed robbery of the local Costco.

The cops found the car abondoned the next day. His insurance company forced him to take the car back. He obviously couldn't use it anymore as it reminded him of where it had been. He sold it a few days later for silly money and bought a VW passat.
 
Little update. I was at home last night at 10pm and my friend rand me saying "your onlie on ps3!!". So the person who has robbed my ps3 has turned it on and I had my accout to automatically log in as soon as it turns on and found a valid Internet connection. I rang Sony this morning, they can track the ps3 using the ip address and from that they can obtain a home address. The police are in contact with Sony now so hopefully they will hit the house soon.

Oh p.s thanks for all the nice messages peeps. Nice to see some support.

I did a bit of reading on this as I was worried about this for my sisters Alfa; it seemed unfair if they recover the car and the insurance is saved the hassle and cost of a big pay out for a new car, you are penalised by being left a car of lower value. What I read seems to suggest it is only registered as CAT D if

A) There is more than 60% damage when the vehicle turns up
B) The vehicle is found after a pay out and a new car, at which point the insurance co. now owns it

So basically if the car is found quickly before a payout, it should not be registered....

Still waiting for ours to turn up and it's been a week :(
