The post below popped up on one of the other BMW forums over the weekend and serves as a warning for anyone thinking of selling their motor privately to be always on your guard and never hand over the keys until you're sitting in the car. Have to feel for this owner as it only takes a second to lower your guard and before you know it the car is gone. Unsure how the insurance would fair if the keys were handed over
M140is seem to be a common target of late either being stolen by the method below or handing over the keys by force at home where the cars are sitting on the drive.
Personally I'm not sure I would sell a car privately again, chances are this type of thing won't happen but you never know. I always keep the M140i locked away out of sight at home with the keyfobs in a farraday pouch.
So if selling privately as always be on your guard,
Tim.
"A BMW m140i Shadow Edition owner based in Sutton.
Had the car on autotrader for a few weeks, bloke rang me and told me he was interested, came down to view the car, spent the whole morning cleaning the car, was looking absolutely mint.
Anyway, he told me he owned one before, knew a lot about the car, went around car talking about how good the body work was.
He also said he came from not far away having looked at another m140i but said the body work was not in the same condition as mine.
I let him sit inside and have a look, I kept both keys on me at all times, he then wanted to start the car up, we'd been speaking for a while and he totally had my guard down because he seemed like a nice enough bloke.
Pakistan or Indian chap, with a cap on and one of those little manbag things.
Anyhow, I gave him the key to start it up, we started speaking about price etc and agreed a price.
He then asked if he could move the car off the drive (my drive is sloped) and onto the road as the road is straight, I said sure, just let me come round.
As i walked around to get in the car he shut the door, sped off the drive and sped off nearly knocking someone down and almost hitting into another car.
I was absolutely shocked and fuming, tried to chase (not sure why) then I stopped and called the police and they came fairly promptly.
Doubt I'll ever see the car again, I didn't have the BMW Connected app installed so can't even track the car and no other tracker on the car.
I've still got 1 key and the logbook, no idea what insurance are going to say, I'm probably buggered to be fair.
Car was absolutely gorgeous grey, shadow edition, plate was HG18HDX"
