Real eye opener even after seeing similar stunt pulled on Watchdog / re the re-programming of blank key :x its bad news when you can't trust anyone who may call to view a car for sale but that's the world we live in . Trust no-one

Damn... I didnt realise the e60 was vulnerable to the same keyless entry exploit.

Unless they did get a key from the VIN?

I thought the E85/86 was harder to steal because you need an actual key. the later generation of cars were cartridge type key into a slot and push button so easy to nick via programming as there's no cutting of a key then programming it.

I wonder how secure the latest generation of cars are since they are completely keyless go.

The VIN is on display through the windscreen. Is it possible to obtain a key from the dealer with just this number or do they need the VR document?

Apparently you need the v5 and ID. By taking a picture they have all the info to forge a V5 and I'm sure they can get some fake ID.

I wonder if he could contact BMW and inquire about any key sales connected with his V5 document.

Bloody hell, that's not good... some other stories on that thread about cars being taken at knife point too, scary! Shame there are some idiots on there pulling the political correctness card though... sign of the times!

Don't blame you!

You're right having a mechanical key does protect it somewhat more however it could be possible to code a new transponder chip and simply hotwire the barrel (not that I'm an expert)

As for a new key to be coded, it's unlikely that it would have gone via BMW, more probable would be a blank key programmed on the drive itself. The procedure via the ODB port is scarily quick and easy.

Funny though I had a nice argument with my insurance company regarding leaving the car in the garage as they wanted more money. Apparently I'm more likely to claim that I've knocked my wing mirror if I park in a garage, which makes my car harder to steal.

Think I should be studying actuarial science as apposed to accountancy!

A GPS tracking system might be the way to go?

GPS blocker.

the unit from TRACKER (http://www.tracker.co.uk/) would be better as they use a different system for locating the vehicle.
