I tend to have a list of 20 or so funds in a virtual portfolio and keep and eye on them and decide what to invest in, also keeping and eye on past years results etc i have manged 12% over the past 12 months in my overall portfolio.
You do need to be willing to do a bit or research on funds and manager etc. prior to making an investment though so you have a rough idea where to invest your cash.
I don't invest enough cash to be honest to make shares viable to me due too fee's which is why i stick to funds
