Still undecided

Been banging on about changing the e89 for some time now. And it WILL happen.
I’m still saving so it’s not gonna happen for a while yet . But meanwhile, I’ve been looking at all possible options OTHER than the M40i G29 . Im wondering how many people went through a list of potential sports cars BEFORE buying the G 29 ?
I was looking at the 718 spyder but it’s too rich for me unfortunately. Then I started looking at the 718 boxter 4.0 GTS … probably could go to one of these maybe.
Has anyone had one? And a G29 ? I’d like to hear arguments for and against if anyone has had one please. Bear in mind. It’s going to be a daily not a weekend car . From the YouTube videos I’ve seen . People are saying it’s a different level compared to something like a bmw …. I’d love to own another Porsche… this could be my last car . So want to get the right choice. Let me know your thoughts on the boxter compared to the G29

It’s not a difficult choice, if you are an enthusiastic driver that values ultimate handing the the 718 will suit you well, if you are a cruiser and like a relaxed soft top 2 seater then the M40 will suit you well and be cheaper to buy and run with any BMW dealer able to maintain it. Both are very good cars.

I had a 718 CGTS 4.0 manual for almost 3 years and switched into a G29 M40i. The M40i is a great car but after 10 months I switched back to CGTS 4.0 PDK. Personally I find the 718 far more involving , fantastic engine and incredible handling. There is of course a fair bit of difference in value when comparing like for like.

A 718 4.0 GTS is not going to be at the same price point as an M40i. A base 718 yes.

I've not driven an M40i, mine is a 30i and I had a 718 Boxster before it. Boxster was the better car except for two criteria imo, the Z4 is a better cabin (both space/layout) and [ref]deltasierra[/ref], better for relaxed cruising. Maintenance costs would still be lees on an M40i than the 718, though strangely insurance for myself was higher.

It can be but the GTS will be older.

the feedback is helpful, thank you, can you elaborate on anything in particular that made you switch back? Or was it just the complete package. I would ALSO be going PDK route if I did go the 718 way

appreciate the feedback , I totally understand the 718 is the more expensive option. I’m just trying to figure, is it worth it . Both you and above have stated pretty much, the 718 is the better drive for spirit drive… kinda just using my time I have to wait to get the car to do as much background on another potential. Appreciate the feedback

yup , understand the 718 for me , would have to be an older car than if I went the M40i. Say

As well as the things I highlighted in my first post regarding the GTS 4.0, if you can find one with the GTS interior package then it makes the cabin a very nice place to be. I feel running costs are similar to the M40i. The residuals for the 718 are much stronger. Good luck with your deliberations and if you can then have a drive in both.

Spent a fair bit of time driving Cayman 718s in base 2.0 and 2.5S variants. M40i is a great car, but the 718s are so good to drive. Handling, brakes and steering near telepathic. PDK is the way to go, the manuals are so highly geared needed lots of revs to get going and need to keep the revs high in range or feel pretty flat. 4.0 GTS may have the power/torque to overcome this. Running costs are far more expensive than M40i if using main Porsche dealer. Genuine Porsche used car warranty is very demanding, car must be absolutely stock, right down to N rated tyres!
It's a great dilemma to have, either way you will have something special and give you a smile behind the wheel.

I just recently went from m40i to a 991.1. I also frequently drive 718 C S 2.5T recently. While I was in the market for a porsche, I was also looking for 718 Spyder at first but after missed 2 opportunities, the price went up and 911 became more practical for the family. If you are intersted, there are a lot useful comments from others in my m40i for 911 thread.

Couple of thought in my mind if they are useful for you:
1) Porsche is so good at stimulating the driver than BMW so it is an absolute enjoyment to own a Porsche
2) m40i is so capable at doing all the things well (at least exceed my expectation) but it can not do the best in any of those things. On the other hand, Porsche can do something to the best but some other things are not as good or much worse. My list of things including commute, school runs, weekend fun, road trip, camping trip, house moving, track day and maybe some more stupid things I've done with my m40i but don't bother to do those with the 911.
3) If I don't have another two cars (a 520d touring and a ev) to do the daily/family work, I will go for the m40i. But since I have another two cars, I'm happy with the compromise of a 911 as it can do one or two things to the best.
4) For 718, my view is either save a lot of money and go for the base 2.0t without many options so you can get one cheap for about £30-40k from main dealer which will come with at least 2 years warranty (and can extend without additional checks). Or, pay the price and go for any version with the 4.0 N/A engine with the spec you want. After trying some 4.0 N/A 718 and owning the 991.1 with 3.8 N/A then drive 2.5T 718 frequently, I am so disappointed by the engine. One of the main stimulator simply not there despite everything else is still exactly as how Porsche should be. It's a bit like the Taycan. It's a Porsche and it drives like a Porsche and it perform as a Porsche. However, at some point you may start thinking whether it worth the extra £40k+ compared to my wife's daily iX1. Thus, if you just want a Porsche sport car without spending too much money, then the 2.0T 718 is as fun as 2.5T and the noise they make is similar. But, if it were me, I will go for the m40i in this case, as the 60 degree firing overlap caused by the extra 2 cylinders just make a whole lot of difference.

Thanks for all the input people
While I’m still saving, I’m just trying to cover most of the potential options… I REALLY want another Porsche… I’m just not convinced it’s the right choice for me . I doubt I will get the most out of it very often… where as the M40i , with ALL the reviews I’ve watched… just seems such a good all round car …. I’m not a bad driver, but certainly not a brilliant driver… one of the things putting me off the 4.0 GTS is the exhaust note . From reviews, it sounds quite tame until you notch the revs up considerably?? Where as the G29 sounds good all the way through?? Definitely WILL try and test drive both. But my sensible head keeps coming back to the G29 , no matter WHAT other car options I throw in the mix . It might be that a test drive of the 718 gives me the ( can’t walk away from it ) feeling… I will let you guys know when the weather picks up a bit and I get the test drive sorted. Thanks everyone for the input

I can assure you the exhaust note of a 718 GTS 4.0 is, IMHO better than the M40i.

even in the lower revs bracket Boyo ?
Definitely will be test driving one if that’s the case
Yes especially with the PSE activated.

Even the 718 2.0T Cayman sounds great with the PSE on… I’m loving my Cayman, it is plenty fast in the real world with PDK and Sports Chrono… more than enough for uk roads.

The 718 Boxster I had sounded ok, but didn’t have PSE… it makes a big difference

Now I’ve got a 718 with PSE I wouldn’t buy another without it.
