I don,t & wouldn,t for purchase , service or repairs but i know many of you do , anyhow a friend purchased a AUC F10 (5 series) circa £20k at easter , he had a rear end bump a few weeks later & that,s when the fox got in the hen house so to speak .
The car was Sold to him as Ex BMW demo but transpires it was actually out on lease to Sixt rental ! Who before returning to BMW decided to have the paintwork blown over .
This only came to light during the repair for the bump whereupon my friend decided he had been fleeced & was rightly fuming over it .
He then did some digging of his own & revealed that the selling dealership actually knew it had bodged paintwork as it had been pointed out to them by a previous purchaser of same car
From his email to me

"Well mate, been a bit of an eventful and stressful week as far as the car is concerned. I've raised the issue to the salesman who frankly I wouldn't trust as far as I can throw him so I've gone to the used car manager who seems to be a bit more interested.

Even without seeing the report they have agreed to collect the car for inspection, but I've now sent them a copy of the report and said that I don't want the car back and will take it all the way up to court if necessary. The report is short, but pretty clear that's it's not a BMW standard paint job.

Where it starts to get more interesting (and the dealers don't know I know) is that I contacted the previous owner. He told me he rejected the car for the same reasons and that their body shop manager said to the salesman (the same one that sold it to me) "who bought this one?" He also told me that the first owner was Sixt car rentals: not the BMW company car they told me it was.

So, they are collecting sometime this week. I'm pushing for a refund or replacement. I've told them I don't trust them one bit and that unless they sort it, I'll get BMW customer services and lawyers involved. In reality, I don't think it will get that far, but maybe once they sort it, I might ask to discuss compensation!

In truth, I'm staggered at this from a BMW Franchised Dealer. I expect a bit of patter, but I've just had complete lies from them. Makes you think you are best off just buying privately: at least when you do that, you know it is buyer beware and you do it at your own risk. Generally, when I have bought privately people are honest about the car and you don't pay their profit margin!

Cut to the end & he,s had a full refund but this is the best part for the AUC faithful  The car is back on the forecourt & web this week for sale as a BMW AUC / after rear end shunt & dodgy makeover :o

Buyer beware

Generally that's why I like buying privately. You can look the current owner in the eye, ask questions, and try to catch them out. If you can't and it looks good you buy.

With a dealer of 2nd hand cars they can tell you nothing about the former owner, and will promise you the world so you'll buy, and once bought they couldn't care less.

I've seen so many horror stories on here alone about BMW AUC. Can only wonder how bad it must be at "Stevo's Autos" etc

You mention the car is still for sale. Might be worth posting a link/details to help any other innocent potential buyers?

Certainly worth spreading word...

Reminds me of my experience with the first ///M that I rejected after 2 days from my local BMW dealer.

AUC = Always Use Caution

It's only a guideline for dealers to follow and basically they can do what they like if they feel they can justify it.

This is a disappointing story and irritates me! When you buy AUC you expect total peace of mind - that's why you pay a premium? But seemingly like everything in life it's all about the profit.

My last 5 cars have been AUC and I've had mixed experiences too and is dependent on the dealer. I bought an e46 coupe which after a week or two I realised had some poor repairs done - a smart repair on the bonnet and a rear bumper blow over done on the cheap, certainly not what I expect from an AUC vehicle! On another occasion, another dealer and I was blatantly lied too.

Maybe I'm naïve, or perhaps I've been stung with steep repair bills when buying privately - however, I do continue to purchase from the AUC for the simple reason that I have now found a reliable dealer I buy the cars from and my local dealer services and carries out repairs under warranty with little or no quibbling. This works for me and the cars I buy now seem to be sorted and hassle free.

But sadly it's a case of caveat emptor whenever you buy a used car - AUC or not.

Have asked my pal for the details , Ive no qualm,s naming & shaming :? makes no odds to me which dealership it is :P they,re all the same
I have a good mate works in sales at Bowker Blackburn & the indy i use was a master tech at what was Preston,s Colne but now Lloyd Colne
They both have tales to tell that only enhances my dislike of main dealers & not just BMW , to me they are all the same

Vauxhall put me off and BMW haven't reinstated any trust I have in franchised dealers. indies tend to be enthusiasts so I have more trust for them and as Adamski said Private gives you a chance to interrogate the previous owner.

http://secure.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/bmwauc/details?ch=WBAFW12090C837921 buy safe in the knowledge that every BMW AUC undergoes a 120 point inspection

Most people are under no illusion that AUC cars are the creme de la creme.

BUT....if the s**t hits the fan you have a decent chance of redress. Buy via private sale and their responsibility to you is much less and yours much greater. Basically if the car turns out to be a nail you're f*****. Take srhutch's experience with an AUC - he rejected his first Z4MR. He wouldn't have that luxury private sale.

You pays your money you takes your choice....I'm not saying one way is better than another (I've done both myself) but lets not misrepresent the reason people choose to buy AUC.

Steven you keep propagating this myth. There are as many (actually far more) dodgy indies than there are dodgy main dealers. You'll take your pride and joy there without any actual idea on what qualifications they've got to work on your car in some cases. They may have been an ex-main dealer tech but they also may have been sacked for incompetence for all you know. Sure there are reputable indies out there but you have to look hard to find them. Not quite as rare as rocking horse s*** but approaching it.

I know there are crap dealers out there and I'm not trying to argue they are better than indies but in my experience poor dealer experience is down to the onsite management not because they are a main dealer. Any business is only as good as the people it employs.

I think the details of this BMW dealer should be posted here and in as many other public forums as necessary

This is shocking behaviour and I beleive not typical of BMW dealerships - why they are putting their whole reputation at risk for one vehicle is beyond me - desperation or common practice for them maybe

So get their name out there I'm sure other dealers wouldn't want to be tarred with their particularly sh@tty brush either

Posted above mate  Rybrook Shrewsbury  (no pics of car on advert as it,s still being repaired from the rear end shunt my friend had in it  )

I have to agree with OG on both his posts. At the end of the day I distrust most dealers/indi's. Most on here distrust to which is why you all ask for the shim measurements.

When buying though even AUC it is still buyer beware. The problem is most on here haven't got the likes of a paint depth gauge to check for repairs, but you have got chance to address the issue though, where as with private you have not. Buying a car off a long term forum member would worry me less then buying from PH or AT though.

If your friend needs advice I'd recommend motorcodes. They are a government backed company that help regulate the motor industry, are involved with 'good garage scheme' and can give you legal advice. I had a warranty dispute with a dealership with my car but as soon as I started cc motorcodes into my correspondence they all of a sudden became a lot more interested in my complaint. They helped me get a result so I thought I'd put it out there.
