Still not seen a coupe but got overtaken by a lancaster bomber....

Headed up the snake pass from Glossop side a couple of days ago.

As i approached the summit I was met with the sight of a Lancaster bomber flying low level from my right to left in front of me.

Slightly dumbfounded (not unusual) I carried on my journey and after crossing Ladybower reservoir towards Bamford I heard what I thought was a group of hairy bikers approaching from the rear, I checked my mirrors and there was nothing there.

Slightly confused (very usual) what the very very loud noise was i looked to my offside to see the Lanc flying parallel to me low level in the valley which was below me so it was probably only 50 foot higher than my altitude.

The dam buster run.

Sent a shiver down my spine and goosebumps all over, those merlin engines absolutely wonderful.

A sight and sound to behold. :D
 
Flew over us in Waddington- tracked it on Flightradar24 the route came from that direction.

My old fella used to work on the mosquitos when he was in the RAF and they had Lancs there too, two great planes. :thumbsup:

It was going in circles near us in Sheffield with a helicopter tracking it , probably filming
 
My wifes dad passed away yesterday,.my kids are remembering the great days with grandad.
It made me think again about mine.
A rear gunner in a Lancaster,arguabley ,one of the jobs no man would ever wish was his .RIP Lewis

I nipped up to Cumbernauld airport last week to see the NHS Spitfire land, fantastic!

My grandfather, Fred Stott, did the same. He was responsible for designing the engine cooling system I believe

The wooden wonder, awesome plane fast and manoeuverable. There is a charity building one from scratch in the uk, i think it is quite far on now.
 
Well I cannot claim to have worked on Lancs, but I have clambered all over the BBMF one up at Coningsby (We were supposed to be recovering a Tornado with a birdstrike, but blagged a walk round the hanger. Managed a sit in a Spitfire too)
I was on 617 Sqn in 1993, at Marham, and took part in the 50th Anniversary parade for the formation of the Sqn and the dams raid.
We were lucky enough to meet many of the surviving aircrew from that raid. To a man they were quiet, unassuming and didn't really see what all the fuss was about. But their pride for their squadron and their love of the Lancaster was plain to see. It was a great honour for me; one I will never forget. Every time I see the Lanc I take a moment to think of those men, and all their compatriots who didn't return. Per Ardua Ad Astra.
 
Brilliant memories for you and yes a great honour too. We certainly owe a lot to that generation, their sacrifices and courage must never be forgotton or cancelled as they say these days!
