Not only do they look purer but they demanded a higher skill set from the drivers as well (no electronics)
Also a lot more dangerous, but that’s a different matter :o

I really like the new look. Probably look nothing like that though. Especially covered in adverts. :D
Oh and how much time did some ocd phot jobber spend lining those tyres up. 8)

Different* skill set.

Although the older cars were more mechanical, they were also less powerful.

This is coming from someone who's favourite driver of all time is Schumacher (who was sandwiched between the older V12 era and the modern ERS wacky racers).

Some time ago I read Jackie Stewarts autobiography. He had this 'thing' about presentation and giving sponsors best value for money (he reckoned it helped getting money against the big teams).
Once at track he insisted all the transporters were jacked up to put the tyre logo at the top.
To show off his watch (sponsor), his shirts were tailored for him so that the LH sleeve was shorter and the cuff didn't cover the watch.
I think there were other examples but can't remember them now, other than he came across as a perfectionist.

JYS went to school with my mum. When I was a very small child he let me steer his sports car around the back of his folks' garage in Dumbuck with me sat on his lap.
Can you imagine the furore if that happened now?

I often wonder how successful JYS would have been if his best mate Jim Clark had not died in 1968. JC was definitely the best driver of that era and JYS openly acknowledges that.

I didn't realise Clarkson was so old.

If DRS, overtaking zones, gadgets and pandering driver aids are taken away. If more focus is put on driver skill rather than the tech. If it becomes less of a geek fest (backroom realtime component failure prediction FFS!). If they go back to sounding like F1 cars and not a high power hairdryers... Then i'll become interested again.
But until then, I'll stick with following the women's volleyball.
