Been looking for a week now, scouring here, eBay, autotrader, pistonhead every hour in the hope of finding the car that ticks all my boxes, so far no luck, over my budget(£5500) not enough spec(love folding mirrors) to far away. Just some of the reasons I've been put off. Thought I'd share with you a couple I looked at just incase you think I've missed a gem. Please feel free to pass you judgement.

One or two nice looking examples on the face of it but it's impossible to judge without viewing, driving and checking their history in detail.

A couple of points to watch which I got caught with are, service history - adverts always claim the car has XXXXXX miles to the next service (as displayed on the service computer) however they need to be inspected/serviced every two years regardless of the mileage or service computer. If it's due the big service 2 you need to add a few hundred quid to your budget. Also don't assume apparently small repairs will be cheap to fix. Mine was otherwise mint with low miles and FBMWSH but I knew it would need a fog lamp, headlamp washer cover and couple of tyres, but missed the dodgy passenger window regulator that was on it's way out and ended up shelling out £600 plus straight away to put these bits right. But that was nearly four years ago and it's been a dream ever since.

There are some nice cars out there and real bargains so take your time and good luck

Cheers for your post, yeah I know what you mean & I will have to factor added costs into the budget, saw a great looking car on here, seller said lowest he could take was £5500 but only had 5 weeks tax, 8 weeks mot, tyres x4 all getting low(3mm) & due an oil service now.
I'd rather buy one off here as I think it will be well cared for.
I'm enjoying looking though, toyed with a good s2000 I saw but I know I'd regret it.

It sounds like you are being sensible and keeping 'buyers fever' just about under control :)

Whereabouts are you? I'm sure members will shout if they spot a decent car in your area.

That car wold need an MOT before I bought it. Seller is silly not MOT'ing it. Probably something needs doing that he can't afford.

Hi Cracker - me too!!!

I've been looking for nearly a month now, so know how you feel. I can't believe how poorly some people care for their cars and also mis-represent them. So, my 5.5k still languishes under the floorboards, awaiting a "nice" car.

I'm after a 2.5i SE, black with red leather, manual, and WELL CARED FOR PLEASE. Obviously, from all my searching, quite a lot to ask for.

The search continues

Please guys, if you hear of one please let me know (text or phone 0779-064-1045 or PM me or post). Hopefully I can purchase from one of the Forum members, as you all seem to look after and care for your toys

not bothered to much about traveling a distance to get the right car, chatted to someone in Eastbourne & another in Maidstone this week, seems to be lots deep down south!
Be a good excuse to keep the girlfriend sweet with a weekend away to pick it up.
I'm after a 3 litre, anything after that is not set in stone although upgraded stereo, heated seats & folding mirrors would be a big+.
Anyone know of any then give us a shout on here. Be good to catch one or two of of these sunny autumn days top less before winter kicks in properly

Folding mirrors a show stopper? I have them and have used them maybe 6 times in a year. They're button operated and not automatic. In a tight space, you can fold them by hand :)

I'd look for a sound car with a good history and the essentials (msfw and seat heaters) then start thinking about toys.

I know what your saying about the toys, just saw an 04 plate grey with lots of extras, 85000 miles but no history, just a few recent receipts of its last service, new roof motor, battery And disa valve. £5500. :headbang: why oh why no history!!!!!!

Cars with FSH, new brakes and tyres, just serviced, 12 months not and 6 months tax in immaculate condition are out there for under 5k ;)

Maybe just not the exact specs :)

Pinch yourself people, you can get a properly spec'd FSH mint German performance roadster for the price of a miserable cooking hatch that's exactly the same age! These Zed's are looking like real value

miserable blue 2004 Polo auto £5.5k

You could always test drive it to a dealer and get them to out the key in their reader. That'll tell you the history.
Hi Stuart, can you elaborate a bit more to me what you mean.(A rookie Z4 owner)

The dealer can put the key in to a machine that calls up the service history from the computer (or at least the history from BMW Approved service centres)
