Sticky steering problem. Time to sort it! Help and advice.

You need to also consider that most electronic circuits will heat up as they operate (due to power dissipation in various components) and then cool down when switched off. The temperature at which components move out of operating tolerance might take a while to reach...
 
Could a simple heat shield help to prevent the heater from causing this problem? Obviously that wont work with ambient temperatures? But surly cooling fans are cheap could one not be installed? Or am i being a moron??

A heat shield wouldn't do much for the self heating of the circuit but it may help a little if the hot air blowers are speeding up the process. A cooling fan is a very good call and has been suggested before. The fault being caused by electronics might just be a big red herring though. :?
 
Just popped in to the stealers and priced part number 32306767054, seen at the below link:

The lower part of the steering shaft. This is the part that solved JaxZ4's sticky steering issue. Has any one else tried this fix? The part is £260 inc vat, worth a go to try and solve this?

Is that the part that some folk have made improvements to the steering by just greasing it? I remember jaxz4 telling me he was surprised the greasing could ever work as the unit uses sealed bearings.
 
I think it may well be Bradders? It certainly looks like it to me. Greasing the UJs made absolutely no difference for me, perhaps replacing this whole part would? It's a gamble though. The upper part of the steering shaft is £1650 inc vat!! But the fact that there has been some success by changing this lower steering shaft part makes me consider doing it.
 
Rather than gamble buying a part you may not need, why not take it off and see what it 'feels' like and then heat it up a bit with a hair drier or heat gun and see if the 'feel' changes. Just a thought.

Then you can let us know how easy it was to do with piccies :)
 
I may well look in to that, see how easy it is to remove. It might be hard to recreate the temperature and motion etc, but might be worth considering.

Still have to make the decision on whether or not it's worth the gamble.

Thats not actually not a bad idea! if my hopes are dashed on Friday i may well be doing that.
 
If you get round to doing it Machine Monkey, will you let me know how you get on? I doubt I will have time to do this within the next week or so.

In the mean time, has anyone else tried changing this part and successfully cured the problem?
 
It's a good idea to remove the part and try heating it but think that might be beyond the skills of some of us - I personally wouldn't want to mess with a steering assembly. Why not heat it in situ with a hairdryer and see if steering is sticky from the off rather than after an hour or so of driving ? Might need a good 15 minutes of direct heat though - probably frazzling the wife's hairdryer.

I can comment that I did cop a feel of my old lower steering shaft once it was removed and bizarrely whilst twiddling it in your hand it did feel like sticky steering.

I was indeed told that as these were sealed bearings that external greasing should no nothing but clearly it seems to have worked for quite a few folk - so hopefully more than placebo effect.
 
I have experienced the sticky steering issue no more than half a dozen times , the first was sitting traffic with outside temperatures of -14 during the winter of 2010, I did have the heater on full blast to the footwell, which would make one think that its an issue inside cabin . The other times it has happened , its been hot summer days, maybe around 20 degrees .which would make me think its an issue outside the cabin. TBH , I feel we are all clutching at straws .
I feel from what iv read , on this forum and elsewhere I tend to lean towards either a bushing issue ,as machine monkey says , or the worm gear. If one has major problems with sticky steering,I feel in order to be sure of a fix, the column and rack would need replaced.
 
Has anyone moved the electronics, to keep them cool, or replaced the steering electronics . or are they inaccessible ?
 
Earlier, I said about checking the UJs before buying new ones as I don't like to see money wasted - but I think that BMW are probably right and for most cars it's the worm gear in the servo box. I was thinking about this last year when I had the problem on hot days. I was thinking that bonding a peltier cooler to the servo box and switching it on when the problem occurs may help prove once and for all whether it is the worm gear. If successful it could be connected via a thermostatic switch to cool when the ambient temp rises above a threshold.

I had suspected sticky steering two years ago, I lubricated the lower UJ's a couple of times a year and had no further problems.

I researched the issue to death at the time and realised you need to consider it in terms of whole steering system and it's interdependent parts.
BMW tech materials refer to the electronic module naturally heating the more it is worked, and that it has a staged thermal cut-out which reduces the power assistance as the temperature climbs to a critical level.
The worm gears are a precision item in sealed for life grease and the column runs through a pair of nylon bushes, again sealed for life.
The lower column UJs are in the engine bay exposed to elements and extreme temperature changes being located near the engine and exhaust.
The EPS is also sensitive to over or under voltage values and will not function correctly in either state.
The EPS control module connectors can be loose, and internal solder joints fail as in any module.

Logically anything that makes the SYSTEM work harder will heat the module and potentially cause it to trip reducing assistance until things cool. Resistance caused by dry or corroded lower UJs or worm gears binding because of dry grease or expansion (due to heat), or dry nylon bearings will require the system to work harder heating the module. External heating of the module due to the cars heater or ambient air will add to this.
A bad battery or other voltage/wiring problem can cause an intermittent EPS malfunction.
Some of the above will register fault codes on the OBD system.

BMW tech updates only refer to the worm gear being re-engineered and no mention is made of a revised module (unless anyone has seen different?). Clearly if you reduce resistance in the system by lubricating the parts mentioned or reduce the external heating of the module symptoms can be eliminated. Which probably explains why lubricating UJs is sometimes enough, the trick of tapping a grease nipple on to the worm gear casing will help and reducing external heating of the module helps for others. It's all part of reducing load and managing temp.

Looking at it methodically I would check for fault codes, ensure connections were good, check battery and alternator values, lube the UJs or replace the lower column and UJs, and try the grease nipple on the worm gear housing. Then and only then would I go for the full column unit. but as I say mines been fine for two years (fingers crossed) :-| .

edit; or use it as an excuse to buy an ///M with it's nice old skool hydraulic steering :thumbsup:
