Sticky 2nd Gear

My change to 2nd has always been sticky, sometimes requiring a double take. Does not matter if it is 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 2nd. All other gears are fine. Car is a 2005, 2.0l manual. Is this normal and would the CDV mod help this?

Hi Seano,

I recently did the cdv mod myself and yes it does smooth out the 1st to 2nd change a lot. You will notice it straight away. I think the cdv slows down the fluid so much that the clutch is not fully disengaged whilst you are trying to change - hence the notchiness.

Do the mod first and see if it improves it. You can always put it back if need be.
 
Strangely i have had mine removed today for this reason, but TBH no real effect. It has made it better, but still notchy. Although i have a clutch stop, and have not removed it to get more travel on the clutch pedal. See if it works.

One thing is the synchro's are not getting lubed enough, is to change to a much better gearbox oil, like Royal Purple. I had RP synchromax before and it made a lot of difference to the smoothness of gear changes. Thats what im going to do now anyway.

Still have the CDV removed though, as its poo :thumbsup:
