STICKING STARTER MOTOR

Hi can anyone give advice please, my 54 plate 2.2 se has only 11k it is used on weekends and holidays.
The starter motor is sticking ie I have to tap it with a mallet to start the car.
probably the infrequent use is to blame.
Will this require a new motor or would it help to remove it and try to free it.
Also possibly related on turning on ignition I get a loud "electrical hum" which continues after starting for up to 5 minutes, On restarting this only lasts a few seconds.
Any pointers would be much appreciated as it is embarassing having to go under the bonnet with a hammer.
Thanks

I would certainly take it off and clean it, but it should not really stick no matter how much you dont use it. Well within reason :D

Not a dodgy battery as well no? Not a clue about the humming, but could be related some how. :)

Sounds like you may need a new motor, not 100% sure if this is fixable. Hammer under the bonnet is not good for your street cred.

You want to visit a good auto electrian, my wifes Compact used to intermitantly not start. Every garage said she needed a new starter which would cost £££'s, we visited a place i think was called Howdens in Springkerse, Stirling. He looked at it and said that it was a clutch type component in the starter that needed replaced, he did this and it only cost £80. The car never had a starting problem again after that.

I have recomended this guy to people i know and they have only said good things about him, he won't try to rip you off he is really good i wouldn't recomend him otherwise.

Certainly sounds like a starter motor problem causing the hum which may well be the starter not dissengaging from the ring gear.

Thanks I will take it out this weekend, but still not sure of the "hum" as this starts as soon as ignition is turned on but does sound to be from starter area.
