Sticking Brake Caliper

A repair kit which includes the piston and seals is only £15.

Why not rebuild it?
Have you checked that it includes the piston, as the last 'rebuild kit' I bought for my e34 M5 was a couple of seals - for nearly £100.

E34 M5 - item #10 'the rebuild kit' doesn't include the piston, and the diagram doesn't show a line to that component, which may indicate that it's not meant to be included.

Z4M - item #10 'the rebuild kit' doesn't show a line to anything other than the dust seal, so the piston & hydraulic seal may not be supplied.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong though, as I'll get some kits in while they're cheap. BTW, the M5#s 4 pot floating brakes were/are better than the Z4M's parts bin single-pots - but then they were £800 a calliper last time I bought one.

I stand corrected. I missed the line not pointing to the piston and the photo of the kit on the BMINI site doesn't include a piston.

However, it does however include the piston seal.

Sorry, didn't mean to say that I knew one way or the other what was included in the Z4M kit. I just wanted some feedback from anyone who's bought a kit to tell me if it included the piston or not

This may sound like a dumb question, but how does one identify a sticking piston? How much contact/resistance to motion should the wheel offer when free rotating?

I could hear a slight skimming noise when travelling down country lanes this evening with the windows down. It was variable with speed.

That's me just got a sticky passenger side calliper, pulling to the left and serious heat building up compared to the other side. Anyone got a spare or pointer on where to locate one at a good price.

Strange it always seems to be the front passenger side/left. It was on mine too.
Can there be a reason for that?

I think one of my calipers is sticking too, I can feel a very slight grab at the brakes as I'm coming to a halt with my foot off the brake pedal. Has anyone had them replaced under warranty?

You should get them on warranty but you can pick them up fairly cheap and exchange with your old one.

I've just had to abort a trip to Southampton 80 miles in because of this - the wheel got so hot that the tyre pressure monitor warning went off on the dash :o I didn't even know that it worked for high pressure. Babied the car home and stopped off at my local garage who are going to try and find a refurbished one for me. With some luck they will be able to fix it tomorrow. What a feckin' PITA though - after £600 to sort engine mount bolts & mounts last week, this is going to hurt. Currently not enjoying my ownership experience...

Who'd have thought PVRs old car would turn out to be such a dog ? :P

I assume it's the usual near side caliper that's knackered?

Mine did the same a few years back and was replaced under warranty - although right until I mentioned 'warranty' they insisted that I had to replace them in pairs

Not sure if it says more about you or him

Yep, the usual front passenger one. I don't have a warranty, but I've found a refurbished one thanks to TomK on my other thread. Doesn't need to be replaced in pairs, but the pads need replaced. Luckily I have a set I bought from PVR with the car. If the disc is fecked that will take things to another level, but they're not suggesting that yet, just pads.

Me either, we've both done about equal mileage in it right now

But if you think about it... DSC unit, strangely buggered headlights, engine mounts, now a stuck caliper. Seems he got rid at just the right time  :D

No, sold it a week too late as otherwise you would have had the joy of the DSC unit replacement

You must have more roundabouts and speed bumps down your way to knacker the passenger caliper as well as the engine mountings :P

Yes, not so rural here. But I don't think either are actually related to road surfaces or driving style.

I think the caliper is another heat related issue - when the car is stationary and running there is a lot of hot air comes out the passenger side front wheel well, but none out the driver side. There must be some sort of heat dump / vent out that side, and I think that heat is what fecks up that caliper in particular.

Check on European forums to see if their seizures are on the same side as they don't have roundabouts
