Sterling Grey Alpina Roadster S

That's not bad at all then to put a slippy on it, I like them had one on my TVR & 200sx I just like to drive like a child every now & again & it's makes sliding the rearend a little more controllable!

I adore how rare the RS is I have never seen one in the metal & I really respect alpina as a company & sometimes I just want to get a hammer to the gearbox in my M its such a pig to use!! With regards to your 325i I used to have a little play with those in my Old XR4x4 back in the day...I always lost! Lovely looking cars the E30

No, not too expensive at all. I intend keeping #168 for a very long time, and if I were bothered about the LSD myself, I'd just get a Quaife from Birds and put up with the £1200 cost as the actual car is no longer depreciating, so those costs can be put into maintaining/improving her (as I do) Some people suggest I drive like a child on a routine basis :D

The rarity is a nice part of ownership as you rarely see many together (we had 5 at Gaydon this year, and I think it was 8 at Notts last November...only 2 showed this year, though :( ). A back of fag packet calculation based on the number of RS's I've seen/driven/had reports on in the past 18months suggests probably 90-100 of the original 167 are in tidy and well-maintained condition, with the rest being a touch shabby or leggy and a few will have bitten the dust, too. So, a good one well maintained should keep its value well, now.

Miss my old E30  We needed to free-up some money, and it sold to an enthusiast in Ireland a few years back for very silly money. And I mean really, really silly :o Still, if we had that, we probably wouldn't have the RS.....hmmm. I've often been so sorely tempted by E30 C2.7's as the ultimate non-M E30, but then I remember just how many hours I used to spend on it

Ade, you're right. #69s bag of spanners lumpy idle clears in a minute or under, it's just the usual warm up cycle. But then you've driven her so you know. It was interesting how the cars have a different character, even noticing the differences between yours and mine

Nothing wrong with #69, Stu. She's lovely  Boot was a mess, though :P I drove a 3rd one that week, too, and that was different again :o It would have been interesting to have added Iain's to that list to further the science.....sadly, I only got a pax ride there.

The kangarooing is easy to explain. When the engine sits on cold idle its enhanced tickover speed is close to the natural frequency of the DMF drive-springs. If you let the clutch out whilst she's on 'enhanced', it causes the drive springs to pulse at their natural frequency and the car bops down the road as the springs pulsate into the drivetrain. You know the routine...start her, drop the roof, put on your music and by that time she'll have settled to normal tickover. Then she's peachy :D

I'm sure Mark would like to show Lee his lovely Red RS

Oh god. Two big RED RS's on one page of the forum

I know, I know... as there are only 9 in the country, you must be finding it difficult to believe how lucky you are :P

There are plenty of owners of all variants happy to show off their cars. On tapatalk so can't see where you are but if it's vaguely SW then let me know :)

Cheers Stuart for your kind offer, I am in the East Midlands at the moment but do move around abit spent last two years in Cheshire & the year before in Berkshire!

You lot are beginning to make me wish I had joined the elite club with your alpina's, I love rarity, the M is ten a penny in comparison! :)

I was disapointed by a couple of aspects in short the retrimmed multifunction wheel feels pretty thin in comparison to the m wheel i have in my 3.0 and i think i would miss my ZHP gear knob

An M wheel can be retrofitted with the beautiful Alpina leather wrapped spoke covers (with minimal modification to the lower front cover).

A ZHP gear knob can also be retrofitted (the Alpina knob crest will transfer to it), I've done it on mine.

This discussion for me summarises where BMW have gone wrong on the E89. There is neither an Alpina nor an M. What a travesty that is.

Driven two Alpina Roadsters and loved them but I had my heart set on a Z4MC and so that's the direction i went in.

As an aside I think the only car that might tempt me away from trading up to a 997 GT3 is the Alpina B3 GT3 that Sytner brought along to the Zedfest meeting. I did rather like that!

If you had your heart set on a coupe you would never have been happy with the Alpina - I think people are very fortunate to have a choice of two (or three if you count the Z4MR and Z4MC as different cars) approaches to a performance E85

They had no chance of doing that as BMW would not supply them with new engines. Hence Alpina using the "old" M3 engines and there was not going to be any more supply of the new M3 engines for Alpina to put in them.

They filled the perfect gap in the pre-facelift E85 where there was no performance model available.

Totally agree.

Now, since there hasn't been an E89 M (yet), it's too bad we haven't seen a limited run of Alpina on that chassis.

The chassis is not up to the job. End of story, there.

The Roadster S did not continue for only 1 reason - Euro4 compliance.
