Steptronic & SMG? How do they work?

Just recently bought an 03 z4, was wondering if someone could please explain in detail how the SMG is used? & the Steptronic system works?
Ive already used the "sport" in auto, pushing the sport button, but can this "sport" mode feature be used with the steptronic gearing up & down? If it could be explained, would be much appreciated, thanks...

Well first off... Step-tronic and SMG are 2 different transmissions.

I'm assuming you have the Step-tronic. If you press the sport button, automatically the system goes into sport shifting, but you can manually select gears by moving the lever to manual mode. IIRC even in manual mode, if you bring it high enough (like past redline) it will shift anyway. (Not advised).

Google Step-tronic and SMG, lots of good info.

Next time... go manual :P

Don t forget Porsches PDK and Audi s DSG ! 2 clutches or something  I liked my tiptronic boxster... Yes not a manual or as flexible as, but a clever intuitive gearbox that learnt your driving style

SMG is a hydraulic clutch & gear selection operation attached to a normal manual gearbox.

Steptronic is one of them slushy things ;)

I wish I had a DSG! :driving:

DSG is good while the car is under warranty - the quite common metatronic unit failure costs up to 2k to repair / replace

I know quite a few 3.2 TT owners who have had to fork out

Audi Sucks
